Golf GTI mpg issue
« on: October 07, 2011, 01:57:32 pm »
This is something that's been bothering me for a while now. Whenever I fill up I just usually put £20 in (more if it's cheaper than other shells) of VPower. I'm lucky if the £20 of VPower gets me 60 miles till the light comes on? I find this very odd as I'm driving very sensibly and hardly ever on hard boost. My Type R gets more miles to £20 than the golf and that's when driven hard too....

Does anyone else get similar mpg to me, usually when I'm driving the trip computer says around 16-18 mpg

hardly ever on boost and only getting 16mpg? you have issues of some sort. I get 30mpg commuting and thats normal driving and traffic.

Mixed driving with putting my foot down at times i probably see low 20's at worse. Would only see under if constantly putting foot down.

I dont get many miles to £££ because of price of fuel :( Think i put £50 of momentum in and do about 220-250 miles

no that is shocking, if you really want to check the range per tank then you need to fill the tank up to one click then run it for awhile longer the better for an average and then fill up again and log the miles and the number of litres used to reach the first click off again that will give you an accurate mpg to check what the computer is saying.  but I personally see around 30mpg round town and get upto 36-37 on long runs and can get 400miles to a tank which is £60 of v-power.

I just use standard 95 RON and get 35mpg average. I put £70 in and it has done me 300 miles or so. Sat in traffic quite a bit and not too shy of putting my foot down.

ill try and convert, but i usually average around 8litres  (35mpg) per 100k, and i do probably the EU test as my daily drive, 15 min in town and 15-20 a roads and highway.

its more fuel efficient then my 1.6 alfa, and i drove the alfa harder then the golf

seeing about 24-26 mpg on stage 2+ on short journeys, so to get less than 20mpg something is not quite right

It's ridiculous I'm getting such low mpg, any ideas what could be causing it? Maybe a leak in the exhaust? So best thing for me to do is fill the car right up and then drive till the light comes on. Then from that I can see how many miles I'm getting per litre and full tank?

Could it be something serious, confused to what it could be?

I was just suggesting that the computers can be out on what they say so if you want to calculate manually then you need to fill the tank to a known level (full with the pump clicking out) then drive for any amount of time but the further the more of an average you will get, then fill up to full one click again and then take the mileage covered and the litres to re-fill (so you know how much you have used) to calculate.

Its just worth sanity checking your computer figure of 18-19 mpg.  as I am not 100% that the low fuel warning is based on fuel volume or range if its range then the low mpg reading will be causing the computer to think you will run out before maybe you are.

If it is that low then you need to get the car checked over I guess things like cam follower fuel system (check no one is syphoning your tank) that sort of thing    not sure how it could be exhaust related.

I'll wait till the lights on next and then fill up. From that I'll be able to work out what sort of mpg im getting. I'll update soon. Thanks for the replies

So just drove home from work, around 5.5miles. Drove under 3.5K RPM all the way with no hard acceleration and guess what........19.1MPG according to the trip :sad1:

I was granny driving all the way and still under 20mpg? How can this be? Will fill up tomorrow and see how it go's. It can't beleive it tbh. Even with a full tank I can't see it making that much difference surely?

It sounds like the car is running on cold start all the time,  it could be something as simple as a temperature sensor making the ecu think the engine is cold.
Its just a guess though i should add.  :happy2:

If that's the case would the engine not also idle quite high? Although this could be the case how's best to diagnose the fault?
