If that's the case would the engine not also idle quite high? Although this could be the case how's best to diagnose the fault?
I honestly dont know the answer to the idle question, but i would guess that the engine would run rich longer than the 30ish seconds of fast idle on start up.  As for diagnosing the fault, there are some VCDS (vag com) experts on here that could point you in the right direction on which blocks to log to see if you are running rich all of the time. Alas, i'm not one of those experts. :sad1:

No point putting £20 fella, fill her up as the other guys have said! I get 30mpg average! 400 miles to a tank if driven carefully, filled up with v-power the other day £76!!!!

Its not driven like a granny its driven on long runs at legal speeds, and I have added body panels from bluemotion and TT which took me from 340-360 range up to 400.

The high revving at start up is to warm the cat at that time it double inject per 4 stroke cylce once when it should normally and another ready for exhaust vents to be open so that EGT temps will help the cat to meet emission temps as soon on start up as possible.

I just had the same problem, turned out to be air mass sensor, £124 fitted, solved the problem straight away, see if you can get someone to check the airflow for you, it should be above 200 ( so I was told)

Hang on surely this is about right. £20 60miles light comes on and states 50-40miles left to empty? So all in when the trip gets to 0 a 90-110miles would have been driven?

This is something that's been bothering me for a while now. Whenever I fill up I just usually put £20 in (more if it's cheaper than other shells) of VPower. I'm lucky if the £20 of VPower gets me 60 miles till the light comes on? I find this very odd as I'm driving very sensibly and hardly ever on hard boost. My Type R gets more miles to £20 than the golf and that's when driven hard too....

Does anyone else get similar mpg to me, usually when I'm driving the trip computer says around 16-18 mpg

Don't know whether it's just me but the last half of the tank does go down faster so if you are only putting £20 in at a time that could be part of the problem. Not sure if its due to the curvature of the tank or what. In fact if I fill the tank up full, until the pump clicks off I can get about 60 miles or over before the needle even moves :-)

you get all the fuel in the pipe that feeds the tank before the sender can even move.  And despite running down to 5-10 miles on the range you can never get much more than 50 litres into the tank so even when the light comes on you still have some 5 litres of fuel or just over a gallon in old money.

i'm assuming my A3 has the same tank as the Mk5, but i can push just shy of 60 litres into it if it's been running on fumes. (qutoed tank size 55L.) i get about 40mi from the fuel in the filler pipe before the needle wears down.

i thought the 28mpg i get was bad . on motorway runs it's quite difficult for me to get decent fuel mileage if i stray anywhere over 70mph.

I'm going to fill her up today and go for a long run. See what mpg she returns. According to a few other GTI owners they seem to think around 20mpg is normal in town driving. On the other hand, when I fill up £20 the trip says I have a 90 mile range but it always turns out to be more like 60 miles
