HPI check... Mileage discrepancies... HELP
« on: October 08, 2011, 06:04:22 pm »
I am sure one of you will be able to reassure me.  I have carried out a HPI check on an 2007,Edition 30 that i am due to view and hopefully buy tomorrow, however it states two things.

1 - Outstanding finance from VW financial services - have a confirmation letter from 3rd oct 11, stating that this has now been settled, i presume it takes awhile to clear off the system.

2 - Mileage discrepancies - 23/09/09 3,000 logged by DVLA & 01/10/2009 24,000 miles logged by NMR.

Surely this would be an recording error, as the current owner purchased from Crewe VW on 02/11/09 at 3,383.

Waiting for him to supply me with the V5 reference number to check the MOT histories.

Any words of advice please, I've been looking for an ED30 for months and being surely annoying a number of members with questions  :P

Hi

1/    You are correct, it takes up to a week to clear off the system, but as long as you have the letter, and probably best to ring up just to be sure, you will be 100% fine.

2/    Reference the mileage discrepancy, it certainly looks like an input error - If you log a call with NMR, they will be able to clear this up for you.  The DVLA mileage has been logged by the 1st owner, then I suspect the dealer input the wrong mileage when they HPI checked it.

Basically neither should be anything to worry about, just needs a bit of groundwork to clear up.  As you say last owner, purchased it with 3000 miles from a dealer.

MOT history is obviously only after 3 years, so it can meddled with in those 3 years. It happens very, very often. A lot of cars are clocked back, you'd be amazed.

first one with the finance could be an error in updating (happened to me)

as for the miles mmm would put me of (just being honest) but could be a genuine mistake.

The other problem is if your having doubts now and buy it then when you do come to sell the next buyer will have the same issue.

If it is a mistake, which it looks like it is, and can be proven, the NMR will correct it. However if you still have doubts, walk away

Lightbulb moment - a vagcom scan can read the ecu memory and read the correct mileage, surely that would solve any doubt....

It seems a little odd that there are nearly 16 months between MOT's????  :surprised:

that wouldn't work. that's how they clock the car in the first place.

checking MOTs is a way to go - on another forum i was a member of someone bought a car (off Audi as well) and then did the MOT checks and found it out had been clocked even thought it was HPI clear!!

sadly there's no sure fire way to tell - you have to use as many of the above suggestions as you can, and then use your senses. if you're not 100% sure then walk away

The mileage is stored in multiple locations, I'm sure a technician at VW could find out the mileage if they wanted to.

I had been lead to believe that a vagcom scan can read the main memory of the ECU to give the correct mileage, had it done on my mk4 anni.
