MK5 1.4TSI 170 thoughts

Hey Folks

I've been offered a Golf GT 1.4TSI 170 for a very good price and i'm quite interested TBH. But im a little bit sceptical about the engine, i've had the engine previously in an A3 as a compay car and really liked it but whats it like when it comes to re-mapping etc? Are they reliable just the thought of a supercharger and turbo brings thoughts of big bucks to mind if something goes wrong. I'm not going to be after all out speed as I intend on fitting air ride and going for the euro look

What kind of mpg should I be expecting and is there anything to look out for with them?

Ben

the golf and the A3 never shared a 1.4 engine. the Golf has a twincharged engine hence the 170bhp. the A3 had turbocharging only, and was only good for 125bhp. the A3 used their own 1.8T for 160bhp instead of twincharging.

i know Audi's offering is good for 200bhp with a map, but i've never heard good things about either of the VAG 1.4 offerings

i've heard the Audi is underpowered, and the Golf is rough an unpleasant. that said i've never driven either of them, and a test drive is better than hearsay.

I have the 1.4TSI(180ps) in my fabia vRS, im stage 2 running circa 210hp. My car is only light (1200kg) but performance wise id put it somewhere in between a stage 2 (260hp) and stage 2+ (280hp) 2.0TFSI.  A golf is a couple hundred kg heavier so performance wouldnt be as good.

I believe the older 170ps twincharged engines run a different turbo and fuel pump to the newer 140&180ps variants and gains are lower.

The engine is an absolute peach though.

Issues seem to arise from misfires due to spark plugs.  So change them annually and you'll be fine imo.  They also run very hot so definitely consider an intercooler as an early upgrade

Edit

Mpg i can hit 35-40mpg in town, and over 50mpg on a staedy motorway cruise.  Driven like an idiot it only drops to low 20s.

Good gains available from remapping though, all i say is ignore some of the tuners quotes as there are quite a few with farsical quoted gains

Stage 1-circa 200hp
Stage 2 -circa 215hp potential for more if you go for full TBE, IC, Intake etc
Stage 3- circa 230-240hp with hybrid turbo, injectors etc

This is mine with the shark stage 2 map on it

You want to PM 'Rich', don't think he comes here much anymore. He used to have a MK5 1.4 TSI 170, shall I message him on Facebook for you?

Nair - Yes please if you dont mind.

Sy -  cheers for all the info :happy2: I will be more or less buying the car trade so the chances of a test drive are more or less nil :rolleye: More or less the same way I buy all my cars lol. I'm not wanting a rapid car been there done that have a lack of bank balance to prove it  Just want a nice car that is decent to drive and has a lil bit of potential for me to play with and gets good returns. Hmmmmm looks like im gonna have to toss a coin and leave fate decide.

I drove one of these when they came out on a 24hour test drive, I was really impressed with it for a small engine is a mid-sized car.
