coughing and spluttering
« on: September 05, 2011, 07:56:17 am »
Ok so the cars been taking up to 5 seconds to start lately coughing and spluttering all the  way!
Took it back to Vw and they said it turns over a lot due to some sensors in the engine? but its getting worse, it only does it when the engine is cold and starts instantly when hot?
Any ideas why this is happening or is it the norm?
Thanks in advance!

When did you last change your plugs?

Get it logged, prob end up being coilpacks or sparkplugs

Try turning the key to the ignition stage (all dash lights on) and leaving there for 5-6 seconds on cold starts before cranking the engine - the GTI's are apparently known for hesitant cold starts and this makes a big difference to mine..no hesitation if left for said time  :happy2:

Thanks Yeh I have tried that, its got worse too! Now mine has started to drop the revs to about 300 after a hesitant start, Vw say that because its under warranty I have to wait for it to throw a fault code up before they start throwing parts at it! Even though they have admitted somethings not right! Does yours dropbthe revs too! I wad thinking it might be something to do with the idle?

mine gti is 2008 with 45k miles on it and a bit hesitant when cold, doesn't really bother me, revs are stable though

mines only hesitates to start on cold starts uf you don't give the system a few secs to prime, but either way, once it starts all is well.. no dropping revs etc. Has 30k on the clock

mines fairly low mileage at 23k 2007 too! forgot to mention also only when engine is completly cold, ive even put the oem air filter back in as the vwracing one makes it worse :sad1: its so hard to get the message across to vw to actually look a bit further that the diagnostic machine what ever happend to the trusty ol mechanic that diagnosed problems by ear lol!
