Author Topic: Worried Newbie '57 Edition 30 owner: creaky N/s rear suspension & DSG 'clunk'.  (Read 3726 times)

Hello gents & ladies.
My first proper post outside new members area. My '57 plate 5 door Edition 30 has been in my hands for less than a week; picked up from Wolsey VW last Tuesday after doing the deal which included my old Audi A6. Beautifully presented by Wolsey, the drive down to Wiltshire from Suffolk was easy as I became familiar with the Golf's controls and smooth but rapid power delivery. Motorway surfaces produce more tyre roar than I'm used to and off the Motorway the first issue because apparent. A creak/knock from Nearside Rear I think - particularly at slower speeds on less regular road surfaces. I've read ARB bushes can wear - the car has just turned 60K. Any ideas please?
More worrying is a hesitation from the DSG box from stationary and today a big 'CLUNK' when accelerating which didn't repeat itself. I've a years warranty, the car had a timing belt at 59K and a DSG oil change at 42K. Should I be worried?
Third issue. Only under streetlight have I noticed 2 small but significant creases/small dents on the front of the bonnet, above the VW emblem. Perhaps a small knock into another slightly taller vehicle and repaired although no evidence of a repair or more likely the bonnet slammed down whilst something underneath causing the raised creases and distortion.  It isn't really visible in bright sun (the conditions when I twice viewed the car) it is cosmetic but not something I would want to ignore.
Hope I'm not being premature with my concerns but don't want to be in and out of the garage with problems.

If I were you I'd exercise your warranty and be all over said dealer like a rash!

Difficult to diagnose without looking at the car and driving it. Contact Wolsey Immediately. They are really good and is where i got my Ed30 from this time last year. Its a bit of a treck but if theres an issue i am sure they will lend you a car while they have the car.

Mine has started making a clunk from the rear too at low speed - have to keep us posted on here if the dealer diagnoses anything  :confused:

I had the clunk/squeak from rear on my R32, was the top mounts for the shocks, dealer should fix this under warranty. The DSG I would get the dealer to sort... As for the bonnet, I think mine has something similar and is where someone has closed it a bit hard... hardly noticeable so I don;t worry, will sort if ever i get it sprayed once i starts stonechipping...

Whereabouts in Wiltshire? I'm other side of salisbury ;)

Mine has the same on the bonnet, looks like a light crease a few inches from the front, probably from somebody pushing down to close it

I hit a falling acorn at 60mph the other night.
I had something similar but on the roof. Driving through a country lane and hear a crack. Thought it was a stone chip but the windscreen was clear. Got to work and had a look - tiny scratch in the paintword on the roof where it hit the car. No dent though.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Thanks for all he comments re: my Edition 30 creaks and groans etc.  I emailed the salesman who I dealt with at Wolsey Ipswich and he informed the Sales Manager who got back to me today.  MY issue with the bonnet creases has provoked this reaction:

"1) The creases on the front edge. We appraised the car when it was brought in and we were more than happy with the condition of the vehicle for sale. We also have a dent specialist who comes round and makes his living from spotting and removing the dents in cars on our forecourt. Finally, we looked at the car together when you took delivery of the vehicle on a clear dry day. With none of us spotting these marks at any point in the process I am afraid it is not a cost we would be willing to cover at this later stage, as we have no record of the dents being there."

I viewed the car in bright sunlight and the dents or creases were only apparent under streetlight when I arrived home in the dark.  Admittedly they are smallish and most people probably wouldn't notice but I have noticed them. It seems a number of Golf owners have this same couple of creases in almost exactly the same place.  I've been around Paintless Dent Removal workshops both here and in the US and the PDR technicians all use a florescent light bank either directly above or just to the side of the panel they are working on to properly see the damaged panel.  It shows the contour of the dent by reflecting the lamp and highlighting any dip or inperfection. It is often extremely difficult to see the extent of any damage in daylight and particularly on a light coloured or Silver car like mine.

My creaky and groany rear suspension was met with this:

"2) The knocking noises could come from a number of things, they weren't picked up on our multipoint check but this could be down to varied road surfaces as you suggest. Certainly anti roll bar bushes could be a cause of this, but there are other possibilities so our recommendation would be to book it in with your local dealer and have the car diagnosed under warranty. Until we know the outcome of this it is difficult for us to comment further but we would take this issue very seriously and would not expect any kind of issue like this on a car that you have collected so recently"


This is a better response and one I will get on to tomorrow.

Any thoughts on the dent issue though?

Now I've driven my Golf for a week I'm really keen for someone who has an Edition 30 to drive my car and let me know how it drives.  I think the suspension is rather harsh and crashy and apart from the aforementioned creaks and groans I'm wondering if its 60,000 miles have taken their toll on the dampers and springs or perhaps it's been substituted for a different after market set up??  I'm probably worrying unnecessarily having come from a much softer Audi and the roads of North and SW London where I've been whizzing around today are particularly pot-holed but it'd be great to get an experienced Golf Edition 30 owners' views on how it drives.
Any London owners??

You have answered the question yourself regarding the crashy suspension as you have been used to an audi and the ed30 has 18 inch wheels with low profile tyres with less forgiveness and also sporty suspension. I think what you have experienced is what happened to me . When i bought my car i found all sorts of little things i thought were problems but established were not. What you are doing is worrying too much about your purchase. Buying from VW Dealer is the best way to do it. You will eventually be happy with your purchase i am sure , i am :smiley:

I always buy from a main dealer, if it has an approved used car warranty, just book it in with your local dealer to get it checked out... If you can replicate the fault they will look into the cause and rectify it and send VW UK the bill!

Don't worry mate, it'll get sorted and then you will totally love the car...

I also have an ED30 with 59k and find on what seem (in previous cars) to be flat roads it is a harsh ride but not teeth shattering so i'll put up with it until i gat some eibach springs?

i'm on 4 brand new Dunlop Sportmax - 225/40/18, not sure what were fitted as standard?
