Private plate

Hi y'all

Im going to be part ex'ing the GTi soon.
Got a private plate on it.

Question is, do i change it back to the normal one first and then part ex, and put plate on new car?
or
Can i do a straight swop from private plate to new car?

Can it all be done in one day? or do i need to wait for paperwork etc.

If you're working through a dealer who is supplying your new motor, then they can do this for you. Otherwise you need to do this yourself. You will need form V317 Application to Transfer or Retain a Vehicle Registration Number, either download from the DVLA site or get from a local office. You'll need to send this with the V5C as well as any current tax disc and other documents. Normally you will receive a temporary disc to display while your original goes back to the DVLA.

The recipient (new vehicle) must be insured (you'll have to send your certificate with the form to prove this) as well as taxed and (if applicable) have a valid MOT certificate. This slows down the process, as you can't put your number on a new vehicle until you've stumped up for insurance, and received the certificate.

The transfer fee is £80 and it will take a couple of weeks, I'm afraid. It's no quicker to apply to have your reg number held on retention, then moved to the new car once in your ownership. In either case you'll have to inform your insurer who will issue new documents (check the sneaky buggers won't charge you for doing so).

So my advice is let the dealer do the donkey work if you're buying & px ing through one. If it's private sale, get your plate on a retention, then apply to get it reassigned

If you have a DVLA office local to you, they will put it on retention and reassign the existing plate (if possible) or another one from that year the same day.

My recent experience (buying the TT and car for father) Dealers are getting reticent to carry out the plate swap legwork.  I think they are getting hacked off with the extra legwork, and DVLA driven delays.

What i dont get is, the insurance?

If i tell my insurance i have a new car, which reg should i give them?
Which process needs to be done first?
My DVLA office is close, and i remember getting all this done in an hour when i had my private reg put on.
The last time i did it, i went to DLVA office, took the docs with me, they gave me new tax disc, i then went to garage to get the plates made and put onto car, and phoned up insurance to tell them of the changes. Was this wrong?
As i didnt have the insurance certificates, was i breaking the law in putting plates on car first?

Give them the current reg it has but advise them the reg is going to change soon as you are moving the plate, then call them up when the plate has transferred and they should swap the reg over (and hopefully not charge you an admin fee - some will say they are going to, but put your foot down and they'll often back off)

What you did last time is fine - you'd end up with the docs to say the plate had been transferred so as long as the insurance is changed their end, you'd have documentation to backup the plate swap if you were to be stopped before the new certificate came through.

I'm going through this right now. Its right PIA, can't see in this day and age why it takes so long with electronic access to all records. It seems to be slower than it was years ago, theres progress for you.  :fighting:

Btw I was advised about 2 weeks to change plates from 1 car to the other.

Is it no quicker if i goto DLVA office instead of posting

So let me get this right.

I take my V5C (just green section 10 part) and tax disc to the DVLA. They will give me a new V5C with the original reg on, and ill have my private reg on retention?

Then i can take car to get part-ex, get new car insured, go back to DVLA with the new cars V5C and change plates?

Is this not do-able?

Im looking through paper work now, ive got my original green V5C (new keeper supplement) and also another one, which i got from the DVLA when i changed the plates, but the new reg is written on and stamped by DVLA. Am i missing something?

As said before, go to the DVLA office direct - it should be quicker if they are feeling helpful

You take your V5C and tax disc to them, they will give you a new tax disc with the reassigned reg and a proof of registration change document, and will post a new V5C to you within 4 weeks. You'll also get the retention document for your private plate.

You won't have the new cars V5C instantly- you'll only have the green slip, so you may have to wait for the V5C in the post before you can swap the plate across.

my dealer changed mine when i bought the car from them free of charge.
