Problem with Polar FIS or Canbus?
« on: October 19, 2011, 05:49:32 pm »
I removed the Polar FIS+ to install the latest update as it had been freezing almost on every journey ive made since install (was hoping latest update would sort this problem). Though after the update i forgot to reconnect the Polar FIS and used the car without it. However when i drove the car the MFSW volume wasnt working and i had lost audio and navigation menu's on the highline, the RNS510 also failed to turn on automatically with turning the igition on and the RVC didnt display the image on the sat nav. After reconnecting the Polar FIS+ back up everything worked fine again, though this could be a coincidence and nothing to do with reconnecting the Polar FIS.

Usually when the Polar FIS freezes turning the car on and off resets it and everything works fine again untill today  :sad1:

I used the car today and everything worked, though like usual the Polar FIS froze halfway through the journey and upon my return from the gym the Polar FIS is no longer working and neither are all the other things ive mentioned above.

From what ive heard the Polar FIS is more stable with newer can gateways as im currently running a K can gateway and maybe upgrading to a newer one may sort this though im unsure where the problem is  :scared:

Im not saying its definitely the Polar FIS and im not looking to put anyone off from buying the product as its a brilliant piece of kit, as mentioned already it could be something else is loose or malfunctioning.

Anyone have any suggestions please?  :jumping:

Hi Alan

As you say, the Polar FIS is a brilliant bit of kit. I have just updated to 0.1.8 as mine is a FIS + Advanced, so even more brilliant, what version is yours?
I think my can gateway is version AD, I'll try to check later. I don't have any problems with mine, I'm just waiting for instructions, although I have sussed most of it out.

Good luck anyway.

Mines a Polar FIS+ with firmware 0.1.8.

AD is the version i think i should update to. Im hoping this should sort the issue. Though im confused why i lose the other functions if it is the Polar FIS that is at fault. If the Polar FIS just piggy backs the gateway it shouldnt block any basic functions when the Polar FIS is struggling to maintain a connection.

Though the problem may lie with the can gateway

Thanks for the replies  :happy2:

The only bit i find confusing is why would the problems the Polar FIS is having, cause it to block other parts that the gateway is used for? I.e block the audio and navigation menu's on the highline etc

Really not too sure you would have to ask rich about that!!!

maybe also try switching the cables around and that might help.

I used to have a similar problem. I totally lost control to my MFD2/Nav etc.
After much diagnosis and discussing with Rich we suspected the Fis+ cable. Rich kindly sent me a new cable which I carefully installed and all was restored.

On my car the K gateway works with the Fis+, but only with certain firmware.
1.5 was good, 1.6 locked up all the time, 1.7 not a single lock up and 1.8 locks up quite often.

I’m now back at 1.7 as for me it’s the best firmware so far   :happy2:

Hello Alan, As people have said there are some issues with the K gateways at K the manufacturer changed and the number of bytes on the gateway increased.  So its an oddity with the K gateway.

With the other issues the cable for the polar interrupts the infotainment can so the information between the wheel and the nav system and the single to do the out switch on and off for the stereo wont get through, this is the only system that it interupts the others are all passed straight through.

The older black boxes dont interupt anything and everything is passed through.

If you ever have an issue with the box then unplugging the box will cause it to hard reset.
