MK5 GTI stage1 poor mpg!
« on: October 21, 2011, 01:13:12 am »
Iv been getting really low mpgs recently, last tank fill up giving me 230 miles and that being motorway miles mostly cruising at 70!
I know that this is much lower than most people get here, the mods i have are amd stage 1, evoms intake, blueflame catback,
has anyone got any ideas what could be causing it?

.
I don't quite understand why anyone upgrading to a remap would expect improved mpg - I would expect the contrary as higher performance demands more fuel.

I know that I see higher mpg returns since remapping my car Robin. Especially @ motorway conditions & sporting my economy hat! :innocent:

I guess I don't have an economy hat! Life's too short for me not to enjoy myself and I don't mean driving fast just for the sake of it but making progress responsibly.

Having said that, I've been seeing the number 29 on my mpg display quite often recently instead of 26.

what was the mpg before the remap?
how many miles on car? last service ?
have you had the DV or PCV changed or updated, as often these fail post remap.

if you remove the oil dipstick while the engine is running does it change its idle speed and go 'rough' ? (it should do)
if it doesnt would suspect your PCV
Also worth a full scan with vcds to check for fault codes post remap.

I don't really understand how the different revo settings technically affect fuel consumption, but.....
I know for a fact, that if I run my car on the more aggressive settings (B8,T4,AF9) I seem to get alot better mpg, rather than using my everyday settings (B6,T5,AF9)
This is when im trying to drive economically of course. If I put my foot down, that's another story.

My mpg hasnt changed much since my remap. So either something's wrong with the car or you have elephantiasis in your right leg :-)

My MPG is always shocking but thats because i bought the car to drive it like it was made to be driven  :signLOL: And yes, a rather lead like right foot doesn't help me out

No i dont have a over zealous right foot im talking of economy to save fuel so obv am talking about driving gently cruising, and the mods considered i have read many places where people are running stage 2 and achieve 35 mpg+ and roughly 350 miles to a tank or more, specailly motorway miles should be the most

....I've never seen my fuel tank display show as many as 350 miles when filled - Usually a max of 320. The only mpg value I look at is on the display and it's very rare indeed even when cruising gently etc that I see over 30 mpg. I know that petrol is expensive but her mpg is a bit academic. Someone I know had a Mk5 GTI, then a Mk6 GTD - He changed because he's not a performance car driver and didn't like the mpg.

I don't know if it makes a huge difference, but what sort of fuel are u running? Do u use the same fuel all the time?

....I reckon that not running the VW recommended RON fuel it would effect performance rather than mpg. Most, if not all, the reputable tuners do their black art based on V-Power. Given the additives etc it simply doesn't make sense not to use V-Power - Not to do so is a false economy imo.

.... PCV revamp from BSH.....

I had a chat with a random GTI bloke I happened to buy some stuff from on ebay..... anyhow, in conversation he mentioned that his worst mod was fitting a BSH PCV revamp - he stated his MPG worsened massively with it fitted, so reverted back to a stock PCV.

Obviously second-hand information, that I can't substantiate, but an interesting coincidence.
