Help with headlight washer retrofit on TDI
« on: October 21, 2011, 05:24:56 pm »
Hey

I'm compiling all the kit required to do this (and low washer level warning at the same time). Got my nozzles today from a scrapped car on t'internet - was hoping some of you guys in the know could confirm what additional parts I need? I'd rather have everything in place before taking off the bumper

Here's what I have...

- Both nozzles
- Hose with T connector
- Washer pump
- Wiring loom from Kufatec
- Low level sensor
- Mouldings already sprayed

Straight off I know I need the grommet for the sensor switch (7M0919382)?
I also need the grommet to go below the additional pump (431955465A)?

I'm sure there's various clips I might need.

If you look at the photo, the short hose from the T has a male end on it, I assume this goes to the pump? Well, this also has a male end on it so there must be a plug to go between?

Any confirmation would be appreciated.

Just to add these are Hella jets, if that makes any difference to the setup.

Thanks Andy.

Hoping that one of the retrofit guru's will be kicking about this weekend before I head to Pulmans  :happy2:

Skard have a search for Golfmans post regards this exact retrofit you have the main bits but there is a few plastic connectors between the pipes, do you have all 4 bumper inserts? And are the jets off the same spec golf has yours?? The basic spec golf anf r32 shar the same jets buts the gti has slightly different one.

Are you using a new 5.5 ltr washer bottle? Or drilling the existing one?

Hey Darren

Yeh the four mouldings are in the pic.

Was going to use my existing bottle (for now at least).

Will have to get a confirmation of what Golf they were off, are GTI ones not interchangeable?

Can you see what's missing between the hose to pump, as they seem to be both male joints.

Now I recall why I didn't do this ages ago..!

Might end up doing that!

Waiting on a response RE: what type of Golf they're off. What makes it worse is my standard car has the Xparts bumper just to add to the confusion.

Darren - had a look at the thread you mentioned and also ETKA (see the nozzle ending A is for all Golf's bar the GTI).

Do you know what the difference is between the nozzles? I fitted one to the moulding and although it's a tight squeeze, it fits in.

Cheers,
David

The only difference is the bracket at the bottom of the jet its angled differently.

The actual jets are the same its just the bracket?

The jets will fit on with a squeeze but the insert caps will sit wrong and when retracting after a wash cycle they snag on the bumper.

Ah right I see  :happy2:
Well I'm picking up the bits'n'bobs from the dealer tomorrow, and will hopefully give this a bash later in the week (assuming the bad weather doesn't come as my bumper will end up airborne where I live).

Found that the jets were from a GTI, so think I've got the right ones for my bumper...hopefully!

Started this today, done everything bar the electrics due to low light.

Darren - you've done this a few times haven't you? Have you encountered a weep from where the jet is clipped into the hose? It's doing it on both sides and slowly emptying the tank, regardless of how much I twist it to make the hose go in as straight as possible. I'm thinking is there an O ring missing from inside the clip? Could always lather it with silicone but that's a proper bodge.

No leaks from the bottle - good old Aldi have some HSS countersunk bits in today which made a perfect cut.

Cheers,
David

Yes the jets have an O ring but also the clips on the adaptor going into the jets can become loose over time and this will not make a proper seal make sure both are okay?

Also is the adaptor coming out of the jets at a 90 degree?? or straight in

Did you get the adaptor piece that comes from the washer bottle to your first pipe its shaped like an S and about 3" long???

I've ended up going to the dealers and pretty much getting everything new, other than the jets and pump. It's been a bit of a 'mare.

Seeing as the kit came straight from a GTI I am surprised I'm finding leaks as it should be plug and play on my bumper. I'm changing it to the exact setup shown on the ETKA exploded diagram. (see my original pic - it has the T piece around the centre grille whereas ETKA has this joint coming straight from the drivers side jet with a Y).

The jets have the hose coming straight out, when I trial fitted this was not an issue, but as soon as the bumper went back on it'd make a slight bend in the hose somewhere and thus kink the connector, making it weep. I've got some 90 degree elbows coming to hopefully rectify that.

Also, I ordered the Y joint in place of the T. This is to minimise bending the hose as much as possible.

Yeh I got the two joints to make the S shape  :happy2:

I fudged up though making the hole for the second pump, made it a tad too big and it leaks (I only had a 20mm bit). Have put some silicon around it for now in the hope that works, but no biggie as I was going to get a 5.5l bottle at some point.

MOT on Monday - with these leaks I've just plugged the hole and disconnected the pump to prevent screenwash fluid leaking away.

Thanks for the help.

David

Small update - got the jets working

Ended up buying a new 5.5L tank which came pre-drilled with the three holes. Re-routed the hose as per ETKA diagram and all is well.

Expensive and a tad frustrating at times, but cannot wait to soak people I don't like when driving in town!
Low level warning works too.

Suppose I should get a set of Xenons next??
