Well I'm now fully qualified to comment on this thread  

After having my Ed30 for a few days I would recommend it over an S3 any day

The ED30 just seems to be more refined in both suspension and engine wise on normal day to day driving. Dont get me wrong the S3 is a great car and you would probably be just as happy owning one over a ED30 but for me the ED30 ticks more boxes than the S3.

But if you can have a good test drive in both and make your own mind up

Thanks for the feed back buddy, after having a look round at weekend i instantly took to the eddition 30 myself so thats the route im going down now (my original choice) im looking forward to buying one now, fingers crossed this weekend.

I looked at S3's too, several 07 plates and a 57 plate, but I wanted DSG ideally in case my mother wanted to borrow the car as im away frequently, when considering this the Eddie is really the only option as Tiptronic (AUDI name for DSG lol) versions were like 3K more for older car with more miles, this 3k difference coupled with the fact that i thought the S3 looked quite bland made me choose the Eddie, and having driven both i dont regret it, fair enuff from standing start S3 will wave goodbye to Ed30 but from 30mph up the cars felt exactly the same to me in fact eddie felt a little quicker, probably something to so with not towing around all the extra weight of 4wd!?.

For me the Ed30 looks better, nicer interior and they are less common, i have owned my Ed30 for just over 2 weeks now and i have not seen one in that time, but i have seen 4 S3's (All in black!).

Get an Ed30 but dont be fooled into paying over the odds, its a buyers market currently!! (Sorry sellers), I paid £2k less than original advertised price for mine (Admittedly he reduced it by £1k the week that viewed/bought it, but i still got another £1k knocked off!!).

Current market rates it seems would be upto 11K for poverty spec 08 plates with DSG, upto £500 more for top spec, but no higher, in fact Glass's guide puts a 08 plate DSG with ave mileage at around £12K and Cap Clean is around £11850.

I see 07 and 57 plates being advertised at £12.5 to £13K and think maybe after a month or two buyers will realise and drop the price to sell.

audi's name for DSG is S-tronic, and 57 is too early to find a DSG S3 as the earliest would have been on an 08 plate... so not exactly sure what you were looking at?

S3s are still more expensive, expect to pay around £18k for a DSG S3 with low - average miles, and yes it'll feel slower than the Eddy but the figures i.e. 0 - 60 show that it's quicker. i don't think quattro is necessary if you're not going to map the car, so then the Ed30 would be a better choice - but if you are it's hard to argue with having 2 extra driven wheels

there's one Condor grey car from a trade seller that's been on the 'Trader for months at around £20k. i reckon you could haggle it down to £18k

Audi are struggling to shift them too so there are bargains to be had - Stoke Audi has a car i was SO tempted with had i not been going back to uni next year. 60 reg 3dr Black Edition (special wheels, black grille, rear tints,  BOSE and BT) with exclusive leather, auto lights/wipers and is a later car so RNS-E as standard with 2500 miles, been a demonstrator there since Dec and they can't sell it. they've just dropped the price by £1k to £25950, i reckon you could beat them down to £24k if you wanted - for basically a brand new S3 Black Ed? that's an absolute steal.

Am looking with half an eye for my next car.  Think its going to be an S3 or maybe a mk6 GTI.  Trouble is I want a 5 door and the S3 sportbacks with the spec I want are out of reach.  Even the mk6's with a decent spec are holding their value really well.  I recall buying my car when it was 3 years old for £13k.  The mk6's are almost 3 years old and still hovering around the £20k mark. 

Anyone know how the mk6 sales figures compare with the mk5?  There doesn't seem to be as many around as there was mk5's when I was looking a while ago.

sorry it was more like £21k... but you get the point, that car has been sat for a while and i would bid him £18k. he'd say no but you'd get a decent chunk off considering that it has been sat there for at least 3 months

The 57 plate S3 was MANUAL, hence my post about wanting DSG and not paying loads more for S-tronic, Tiptronic, DSG version (All the same flamin thing in my mind LMAO).

Aside from the Extra Maintenance costs, extra weight, Higher purchase prices, slightly quicker 0-60 times (But quicker in gear times for eddie above 30mph) and poorer fuel economy, yeah i suppose its hard to argue against it

Hmm, but the higher purchase price is a reflection of the fact that you're buying a current shape S3 versus a previous shape Eddy. Servicing costs are the same - Audi has the same fixed price servicing charges as VW. In any event, you could take it to a specialist. And be realistic, you don't buy either car for fuel economy.

It was a consideration in my decision along with all the above points mentioned, purely and simply my decision was made based on above factors, new shape old shape, it really makes no diff to me, its what i like, but main point being DSG was required/preferred. For the sake of this foorum, think we should agree to disagree on this one as it sounds like he has already decided on an Ed30 anyway
