Hi guys I have just bought a Black Gti on a 56 reg it has 19,000 miles on the clock and looks fantastic for age I need your collective wisdom to help me decide what need doing.

Tha car started out life on a long life service plan and that is what is in the manual but it has had no service until january 2009 9,000 miles, sept 2009 @ 14,000 then sept 2010 @ 16,000, and one in september this year on 18,000 all independant garage but the garage does exist and is a registered MOT test centre. all Mot`s match up and a Recall from VW also confirms the mileage.

but In the week I have had it I have noticed a few worrying things Cambelt was not changed last year, the tyres are all original from 06 and the front inside was worn to the core, but the outer still had legal tread, the oil looks nice and yellow to me, there was some slight white residue on oil filler.

Its only today after getting the tyres changes I feel a bit worried as If i had booted the car around a blow out would not have been fun.

1. I have had the the tyres on the front replaced the rears are original and have 4mm should I change these? the tyre place said they werent in a bad way but it was upto me.
2. im getting the cambelt and water pump changed next week should I have a service done as well just in case?
3. Can I get back on the long life service plan with VW 20,000 mile intervals looks good to me? and what am I technically on now going by the history eg. is it 10,000 or 12,000?
4. Is VW servicing regarded highly especially when it comes to older cars, im a person who usually avoids main dealer through years of people bad mouthing stealers.
5. the spare wheel report Igot today from the tyre place says its a continental with 3mm 4 mm 3mm to me it looks never used do they come with less tread or has it been used?
6. Although I have 2 remote fobs I dont have the plastic tag with the long number on it thats usually supplied with keys, do I need this? whats it do?

I have always wanted a golf GTI and when I saw this for under 10k near me I couldnt resist I just want to make sure I dont damage it due to basic maintenance that has been missed.

any help appreciated guys

And you're better off sticking with T&D servicing on a GTI

Age is also important with the cambelt kit, so in that case it's overdue.
Worth doing it for peace of mind if you're already worried.

Same goes for the old tyres, get shot of them if it's affecting your confidence of driving the car.

It's actually overdue a cambelt, as has previously been pointed out they are also every 4 years.

Personally I would have a full service to include ALL of the fluids changed (oil, coolant & brake fluid) all filters, rear tyres (the spare has been used BTW) and then give it a good going over with a fine tooth comb, paying special attention to EVERYTHING made of rubber as they will perish sitting around (hoses, gaiters, belts etc) and the brakes to make sure they are not sticking or have heavily corroded discs.

Basically all the car has done all of it's life is sit around gathering dust and perishing away, this is worse for a car than a correctly maintained high mileage car.

Ok, here's my ten penny worth:

1. Your call on the rear tyres. I'd want as much tread as possible with winter coming. But unless the tyres are physically showing cracking to the sidewalls that's visible, they will do for now. I'd get rid.
2. If it had a service in September it doesn't need one when the cambelt is changed.  But pay special attention to consumables such as fluids, which are cheap to change and give you peace of mind once done.
3. Longlife is not the best for GTIs. Leave it on Time & Distance, but always request Longlife oil when serviced.
4. VW dealers are like all others; some good, some bad. You'll need to find a well regarded local ish dealer, if you want to dealer service. As you're out of warranty (and the car doesn't have a dealer service history) I'd stick with a good indy mechanic.
5. Not sure regarding the spare
6. You don't need the plastic tag.

You don't mention transmission; I assume its manual. If its DSG you need a DSG oil/filter change (40k or 4 years) as well.

Thanks for your collective wisdom, I am quite a high mileage driver I do about 15,000 - 20,000 a year so I wanted a low mileage car to rack up the mileage, Im going to stick to getting the cambelt done as its piece of mind for me, the rear tyres I will probably get changed to be honest. According to last owner the car was garaged maybe that has offered some protection to the rubber perishing and cracking, the previous owner said they only use it on the weekends hence the mileage being so low. This week I have done about 250 miles and it feels good but time will tell, I think I just got shook up when I saw the state of the tyres which also made me think if the previous owner had a service in September they must have been told about the state of the tyres, what else am I going to discover?

When buying a car I always get a full service and everything checked, if the front tyres where worn unevenly id get the tracking/alignment checked too. Car looks very good though in the pics  :happy2:

Another thing I noticed I dont have a cup holder its more like large space to put change in, is it missing a bottle opener? if so where can I get one, seems a bit of an odd design really, how often do people drink old fashioned coke bottles in their car.

There is someone on ebay selling the earlier All alloy version of bottle openers, in my eyes they look better than the alloy and plastic versions, link below to the guy/girl i bought mine from at same price as listed (£12.99) ebay item number 250907418074.

I use the rear portion of the holder for drinks (McDons etc) although i usually have a bottle of water which fits nicely in side pocket and does not move round as much.

Nice looking car mate, get the cam-belt done and Tyres for winter (Mine is having 2 front tyres ready for winter in next weeks or so).

Great car: best colour  :grin: Mine was 22 months old with 9k on when I got it, I've put 26k on it in 2 years and it's a great mileage muncher.
