Stone Chips......
« on: November 04, 2011, 05:11:05 pm »
Hello all,

I rarely have to use the GTI now but the past two days i ave ha to drive it 45 mies each way to work.

The front is now covered in stone chips just from the past two days.

Im thinking perhaps my bonnet has been resprayed before in its life. Is it easy to tell?

Thanks

Depends who did the work and how good it was done.
Are the roads bad around your area?
You can get a paint gauge that digitally reads how thick paint is.

Have you considered a bonnet bra for the car?

The paint looks good, does not look like its been resprayed just seems very prone to chips.

The roads are not too bad really, thinking maybe the rain we have had over the last couple of days has washed alot of grit onto the road.

I spent an houe touching up all the chips on my bonnet when i bought the car, did them very carefully with a toothpick so they didn't stand out.

I washed the car 2 weeks later and it was covered again - not the same ones but fresh chips  :surprised:

I thought with VW paint being hard it wouldn't chip so easy?

The trick is not to let people drive in front of you  :driver:

I either sit back a way (waiting to overtake) or make sure im at the front of the pack if possible, i hate the sound of the "Ding" as a pebble takes another bit of my Candy white paint off the eddie  :sad1:

I dont - i only drive to work and back (8 miles each way) , setting off at 6.30am when no traffic about and drive home is usually in a queue so not enough speed to send stones flying?

I've done this for the past 4 years working where i am now and have had 15-20 cars in this time and no other has picked up chips

Yes i thought the vw paint was supposed to be hard. Maybe its just brittle  :chicken:

Unfortunately on these busy roads is impossible to leave space between you and the car in front without someone pulling into that space.

my whole front end bonnet, wings, bumper is covered in stone chips poor paint in my opinion my astra did nearly 80,000 miles in my owner ship and was no where near as bad. My mum owns the car now and it still isnt as bad as my 60k golf to be fair the golf is black but still.

Yes mine is black too so probably makes it stand out more.

So seems to be that its just a result of por paint quality on the MK5 golf. Looks great when its clean but does not take much to cause damage

Bonnet bra sounds like a good idea... tempted to get one myself... if only to cover up the stone chips. DOH!  :congrats:

Hard paint doesn't make it bulletproof!

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.
