First De-Frost!
« on: November 07, 2011, 09:24:50 am »
Got my first frosty morning today, had to de-frost the windows! I usually don't like putting stuff on my windows tbh as I'm not sure on the damaged it can do, so I usually leave car on (up the drive with a closed gate) and stick the heaters on for 10 minutes.

However I am also a lazy sod who doesn't like getting up earlier to do this, is the cheap 99p defrost spray that you see in Pundland, B&M etc all OK?

What methods do you take to protect it from the ice? We have just moved from a 6 bedroom to a 3 bedroom house so car can't be garaged yet!

Also I topped up my windscreen washer water last night, is there anything that can be dropped in that to maybe help?

Thanks
Simon

I have a foil cover i'm going to try out. there have been threads about only using vw washer fluid but i have used various brands with no issues of jet blockage etc.  i leased a new focus for 6months and i miss the heated screen, that's the only thing i miss i might add lol.  i bought some shell minus 20 wash i'm going to try and would also be happy for suggestions of what's better.

My take on this is not to use a scraper on the screen as these vw screens seem to have soft glass that scratch easily.
I don't like spray-on defrosters but I rather use them than scraping my screen.
Without traction power is nothing!

I use lukewarm water to defrost the screen. It's the misting inside that is the PITA

Just made a cheap screen cover. Got a large cardboard box & open it out flat & round off any sharp corners. Get 2 large bin bags & put carboard in to one bag & then secure with packing tape. Put the other bag over any un-covered carboard & again tape secure with packing tape & job done.
Put wipers in service position & secure the cover with the wipers. Cost nothing & if it does get ruined make another.Did this last year & worked a treat. Keeps any condensation off the inside off the screen as well. :happy2:

Remember that de-icers usually state to avoid contact with paintwork as they can cause damage (or at least the ones I've used have said so).

I would go with cardboard or carpet/rug method.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I'm starting to clear out the garage so I can start putting the car in.
Have an automatic door, so don't even go outside in the morning. From the house, straight into the garage. Press the remote button to open the door, then drive out, click the remote button to close the door again, and drive away while I watch the neighbour scrape his windows clear

Mine lives in the garage all year round when not at work,so only use my cheap home made screen cover when parked at work in a very secure car park.
