V rating on tyres
« on: November 08, 2011, 03:39:26 pm »
Ok here is my/the missus story.

The tyres spec for the missus car is 225/45/18 91 W I tried to order these but they don't do a W rating in the PS3, so i checked on line and the V rating goes up to a speed of 149.1, MPH. So i thought the missus wont be traveling that fast anytime soon, so i went for the V rating. She turned up for fitting and the guys saw the car and said we cant fit these they are not rated for the car, we don't mind putting them on but you have to initial the receipt accepting the lesser speed rating.
So if i ring the insurance are they likely to be ok with the lesser rating, baring in mind V is still good for 25 miles faster than the car can go.  :rolleye:
Or, are they likely to not accept this.  :fighting2:

Insurance companies have problems with things that aren't to manufacturer spec, kind of like the debacle with insurers putting prices up if you run winter tyres because they're non standard.

My advice is to get someone else to fit them if this guy is being difficult

If the manufacturer state the car should have W rated tyres and you fit a lower speed rated (or lower load index) tyre then expect your insurance to be void if you do not tell the insurers.

Winter tyres however can have a lower speed rating than the summer tyres stipulated by the manufacturer.

They can no longer do that.  :happy2:

What do you mean, can no longer do that, can you elaborate for all our benefit?

Several insurers got slapped wrists for putting up premiums for people running winter tyres. :happy2:

Back to TC's dilemma.

TC, I think you are going to get 38 different opinions on this, so your talking to the wrong people. The only opinion that really matters is that of your insurers - talk to them

My Car runs W rated tyres (168mph) as i expect most Ed30 owners do, however looking on facetube and seeing some of these modified Ed30's touching close (or beyond) 180-185mph (300kmh), makes me wonder how safe that is for the tyres going almost 15-20 over maximum?.

Cheers Nath  :happy2:

I understand and appreciate why they have actual speed ratings, we all have to account for the fools who do silly things with their cars, i am hoping that the insurance companies will show a modicum of common sense when the facts are looked at, if the car is not capable of getting anywhere near the rating let alone my missus attempting to do those speeds. Suppose we will find out in due course.  :popcornsoda:
