Opinions please
« on: November 09, 2011, 06:56:15 pm »
I have recently sold my GTI which is hard enough but now i need to get the next best thing a GT TDI. There are plenty out there and they will save us a fortune in fuel costs but the one question I have is what is the difference between a GT and a GT TDI? I know one is petrol 1.4 and the other a 1.9 Diesel but does one particularly outshine the other? The MPG is better on the Diesel but is the performance much better with the GT?

Thoughts and opinions appreciated, if anyone has any other alternatives I should consider for around 6-7k then please let me know. Kind of want to stay in the Mk5 club  :drinking:

The GT TDi is a 2.0ltr mate, available in the 140 or the 170 bhp versions.  When we were looking for swmbo's GT I looked at all 3 options including the 170bhp TSi petrol engine.  We ended up going for the 140 diesel in the end, partly because we couldn't find a decent PD170 but mostly because it was the best compromise between performance and economy.

Both the diesels have a lot more torque than the petrol and fuel consumption is superior, I was getting high 40's from mine, since I had it mapped to approx' 180bhp and 350lb/ft of torque I have seen mpg returns over 50!!  And when I drive it hard it's not far off the performance of my stage 1 vRS.......

Conclusion, go for the PD140 and get it mapped, you will not be disappointed.  :happy2:

Personally I'd avoid a diesel as the amount of Turbo's going pop lately is very disturbing! Unless you have a spare £1300 put aside!

I recently sold a MK6 1.4TSi and the fuel consumption was outstanding. I used to get early to mid 40's on the school run! Plus if you can get a fuel efficient petrol the fuel itself is between 5-7p per litre cheaper!   Win win!

Just because he's a mod, doesn't mean he's right.......  :P

The 1.4 sounds like a chicken being throttled when under hard acceleration, while I agree (reluctantly) the turbo issues on the 140's is a bit disturbing, although I have the money in reserve just in case, infact I might just do the hybrid conversion anyway!

Phewww! MY2007 owner here!

But I shouldn't get too excited, a mates Jetta just went pop and his is a lot newer than my car.  :sad1:  On the positive side, its now running 200+bhp with a Shark installed hybrid and remap!

And I am right regardless of being a mod!  :P

i had a mk6 1.4 twin charger for a week or so and if i am honest it did nothing for me at all was over geared but took forever to get up to anything fun speed wise and the engine  was a little dull and as for fuel did not think it was that good was in the 30s all the time but just could not get on with it at all.

Mods yes but way too many to stick in this little box

If you had a GTI and want to save money, id avoid the 1.4 and the 170tdi. I have a 170tdi and dissapointed with fuel consumption. Managed 53mpg on the motorway tickling her and average 35 mpg! The 140 TDI seems the best buy for performance vs economey

My 140 is mapped and I usually get about 530'ish miles to a tank (mix of city, spirited and motorway driving) Worst I ever got was about 420 miles and the best was 630 but that was because of a few very long journeys and driving like a granny.

I regret not going for the 170 tdi and mapping it to 200.  Only thing that put me off was the dpf.  I was doing a lot of city driving at the time.  Its how you drive it, put the boot down in the 140 and it'll drink diesel as well, drive it normally and it's a miser.  I think the 170 might be a little bit heavier on diesel, but not significantly.

I love my 140, its a great car......but if I had a choice again it would be the 170.  Would you be able to afford a GTD?

Wow, thanks for all the comments, I really appreciate your honest opinions!

TBH I don't want to go for the 1.4 as I know what I'm like and I hate the strained sound of an engine when doing 70+, at least with a Diesel I can do 70 in 6th and know she is purring and happy.

I have booked in to see this gem later today http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250928319007?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_1156wt_1180 (please no-body try and snake me to it) but after reading the comments about Turbo's on the early 2004 models I am slightly worried and can see why it might be a good price. I helped a mate get a 2005 140 GT TDI earlier this year after telling how good they are. He is currently spending lots of money getting his Turbo fixed and track rods replaced.

My budget is 6-7k tops so the GTD is way out of my price range. I am considering an A3 TDI 140 S-line but it has to be DSG.

Oh the fun of driving around in my Mums old Megane meeting dodgy dealers and wannabe traders, I am not looing forward to this car hunt
