Mark 5 Gti Tyres
« on: November 11, 2011, 12:09:16 pm »

Hi,

I'm new on here today. I bought a 55 plate Mk5 GTi a couple of months ago, and replaced the front 2 tyres this morning. I was on the 1.6mm limit on the Vredestein Settantas it came with, and was going to buy some Goodyear Eagle F1's.

I ended up with Pirelli P Zero Rosso's for my 18" Monza shadows, as the guy in Trade tyres Guildford warned me that the sides of the Goodyears often blister or get snagged by potholes, as they are so soft. I paid 120 a corner, which was 18 quid less than Tyreshopper, so I reckon I got a decent deal.  Does anyone have any experience of running a Mk5 on these? Do i need to give them 500 miles before really testing them out? I've noticed a massive improvement on braking already.

Any feedback would be great,

Thanks,

Ian  :jumpmove:

My 18's (currently wrapped up in the shed) have said Pirelli's on two wheels, can't say I had much chance to rate them as they are on the back and only had the wheels on for 3 weeks before I swapped to winters!

£120 a corner fitted for 225/40R18? that's cheaper than getting them off camskill and getting them fitted at an independent. definitely a good deal therefore, care to share where?

I got them in Trade Tyres, Guildford, Surrey on the Slyfield Industrial Estate, GU1 1RU.

I paid 100 plus VAT per corner, for tyres, fitting new valves and balancing.

I basically went in their with a list of all the prices I had got from Tyre-shopper and Black Circles, and said If you want to cut out the middle man, do you want to match these prices? I had a price of 121 for the Goodyears Eagle F1's and 138 for the Pirellis from Tyreshopper. He advised me against the Goodyears and then said he'd do the Pirellis for the same price! Bit his arm off!

Really good service as well, and they said they'd honour the price when I need the rears changed.

Cheers SW,

Do you have the directional or assymetrics on the front? The Pirelli website suggests assymetrics all round, or just on the back with directionals on the front.

Sorry, I meant did you have the Pirreli P Zero Rosso Assymetrics or Directional, as they've got 2 different tread patterns (according to their web-site)

Well, I've had a week on the new boots, and I am delighted with the Pirelli P Zero Rossos. I'm throwing the car into bends at much greater speed and with much more confidence, and the car is gripping superbly. The ESP warning light hardly comes on at all now, whereas it was flickering loads before. To be fair though, the Vredestein Sattantas were on the legal limit when I got it, so I can't really make a fair comparison.

Well chuffed though! Going to get them on the back next week as well. I went for the Assymetric pattern on front, so have to go with that on the back too. You can go directional on front and assymetric on back or assymetric all round. You should not go assymetric on front and directional on back, according to Pirelli
