OEM Numberplate LED Issues
« on: November 13, 2011, 01:36:09 pm »
I purchased a set of OEM number plate leds and im having some issues.

Originally I thought the set may be faulty but I replaced them and get exactly the same issue.

Sometimes when I turn the ignition I get the bulb out warning saying that my number plate lights do not work... If I turn on my headlights for a few seconds then the warning disappears and the leds function as normal...

Is it possible that some sort of coding could be required as I was told that the leds draw less current and could be confusing the car to think that they are not working...

Any ideas?

Think you need to make sure you have the canbus LED's so that you don't get a fault light thrown up  :happy2:

I think he means the OEM one's designed for the mk6 et al?

If so I guess that these cars are correctly coded to know they are LED's rather than the mk5's which are not expecting such a low draw. Probably better off with the aftermarket ones which imitate the filiment bulbs.

I disabled "cold lamp diagnosis" for the number plate bulbs with vcds and have had no issues with the oem led's. This hasn't worked for everyone though. I bought the kufatec resistors just in case but didn't need them.

The option to disable the check wasn't available in my friends 2009 GTD so he had to use the kufatec resistors.

I'll answer your pm here so everyone can see it.

My car is an April 2007 car. I didn't try it without disabling cold lamp diagnosis disabled.

You can get the resistors here:

Was thinking of doing this on my 05 plate car but now reading this a little un-sure.

Disabling that setting in VCDS will this mean that the bulb out error light will not work when a bulb does actually go?

Hi, this wont help you, but they work fine in my 2006 GTI, see http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,30092.0.html
and I didnt mess around with any VCDS coding.

I can only suggest you purchase the Kufatec kit

Do you still have your resistors & would you consider selling?

Yes you wont know get a warning.

I bought these on the recommendation of another member http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ERROR-FREE-3-SMD-NUMBER-PLATE-BULBS-BMW-E46-E39-E60-E90-/290603420064?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43a95049a0 - plug and play with built in resistor.

I had led's like them before and they are way bluer than the oem ones.

Do you still have your resistors & would you consider selling?

Ya they are still in the kufatec box at home. I'll send you a pm :happy2:
