What is the best lubricant for door hinges?
« on: November 13, 2011, 03:00:52 pm »
I noticed my doors were taking little extra effort to shut properly and saw the hinges were a bit dry, what is the best stuff to use on these as I bought some 'Halfords Silicone Lubricant' spray, not sure if it's the correct stuff? I've noticed the dealers put some white grease on the doors from new but I would've thought that this would be a magnet for dirt?

I think TeutonicTamer is probably the best person to answer this as I remember from a previous thread he appears to know his stuff when it comes to oils?

I don't want to put anything on that'll make it worse!!!

Personally I would use a lubricant like wd 40.

The dealers do a general lubricating oil spray that TT recommended and is what I use. Comes in a silver can with a red lid and a detachable white nozzle straw.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

+1 for the VW quantum maintenance spray!!! When I get home I shall have a look at mine and see if it's got a part number on it.

But I imagine normal WD40 would do the same job.

I wouldn't use WD40 for lubricating, it acts more like a degreaser.
I use white lithium grease

 oops never thought about that when I typed it!  :star:

Thanks for all the replies folks. After a bit more digging I've found this topic which recommends 'G 000 115 A2, LUBRICANT, OIL SPRAY' - £4.66 + VAT.

Ben will testify that wd40 will do just as good a job - a day before I gave him the keys the drivers door starting squeaking for the 1st time in over 2 years of ownership, a quick squirt sorted it.  :popcornsoda:

WD40 or any oil is the wrong thing in this case.
I'd recommend white grease with PTFE like VW does.
