Hi Tom,

I've no idea, I spec'd it when I ordered the car, IIRC it was an extra 50 Euro.

The early highline modules up to about 2005/2006 could be programmed independantly of a dealer as long as you had a fully working VAG Commander (as Darren has). You need this to be able to extract the SKC (immobiliser code) from you existing cluster and transfer it to the new along with the mileage.

Later versions of the cluster had a revised security method which most VAG Commanders can't access. So although you could buy a new cluster from a dealer, you couldn't program it. Even the dealers themselves now don't see your SKC code apparently when they perform the upgrade, as it's electronically transmitted by their VAS equipment straight from Germany and into the cluster via the VAS. The only option on the later cars is to have a dealer fit it (if you can pursuade them).

I was lucky and found a highline from a 2005 breaker car (same year as mine) with the correct part number from fleabay for the silly price of £20. I then proceeded to donate it to Darren for his car  :signIWS:
(only kidding Darren  :happy2:)

Great thread guys.

I did a cluster swap on my Golf MK5 from a lowline to a midline (last part of number was 950L, now it's 960L).  Ever since, I have been looking at getting a second hand highline cluster but haven't seen the next part number in sequence  (a 970L) pop up anywhere.  Now if I was to try a 971K or 972L etc would that work as long as I could get the SKC and the replacement cluster was pre-2006?  Or would it screw something up?  This way I'd be a lot less restricted and would have more chance of upgrading.

Thanks.

971B is the next in sequence there is a guy on german ebay who does new 2005 clusters with no mileage and the skc code he roughly charges about £100 plus your postage on top, im not sure of his name but I have spoke to him before.

Thanks for the reply Darren.  I understand that 970L (highline cluster) is the natural successor to mine (being the 960L).  Do you think the 971B would work in my car...or any other highline from around that time (2004-2005), or are there inherent electronic differences that I am not aware of (why the heck do they keep changing the cluster part numbers with time?).

If you remember the user name of the german guy, please let us know.  Sounds very interesting!  Thanks.
