What happened to my oil cap?
« on: November 20, 2011, 03:14:44 pm »
Bought an R8 oilcap off a reputable member from here. Fitted it and it's been fine. Didn't notice any weird noises/clunks etc. Yesterday, I spotted this:

(excuse the iphone pics - they were taken this morning)

Had a root around in the engine bay but couldn't find anything. So what happened to the top half of the cap?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Don't they have a grub screw holding the parts together? i think they do as this is altered to move the top part around so it sits differently on the Golfs to make it face the right way

Looks like your screw came adrift causing the top to fall off?

I honestly don't know and I didn't notice a grub screw, but sounds like how it parted. But the question remains - why did it happen? Why did the screw work its way out?

Figured that much but no idea why.

Probably just wasn't modified that well allowing it to pop off through heat and vibration.

My oem cap did that.

It was when I had jelly oem engine mounts and had the engine cover on.

The amount of movement in the engine caused the top of tue cap to be pulled off by the engine cover never to be seen again.
