i'm not saying that you should let it fall to that level, jsut pointing out that the vast, vast, VAST majority of people would do and you don't hear of 2.0Ts seizing up and down the country.

i'm just saying checking it every week is overkill. if you've got the time to do it then great. i don't so i check it every few weeks or so. i haven't come a cropper yet.

Yes but loads of people have, i am not saying it completely kills an engine but it will do long term damage, and their have been people on here who have lost engines because of this, they just dint post it up.    It is up to every individual how often they check their oil and tyre pressures. Just like it's up to me to think they are a fool if they read on here that they drink oil and then still dint check it at all.
The sad thing is if the engine does take battering the owners then sell them on to members on here which is part of our community.  :happy2:

You are both wrong. On a Mk 5 golf GTI, the oil light is not a warning you need to top up. It is telling you the oil light has reached a critical level.  :happy2:

unless you have some proof I think you're wrong. No manufacturer would allow an engine damage without letting the driver know before especially on gti when we all know manufacturer including they all drink oil. Just reading the manual the oil lamp means engine oil level too low. It means for me driving with this oil light on might cause damage to the engine and top up is needed as fast as possible. It also means that unless the lamp comes on oil level is ok.

I know we all here tend to be anal about our pride and joys but good to have some perspective

It also tells you to check the oil level on a regular basis.

There have been a few forumites on here who have checked the oil level when told to do so and found it was below the minimum level. Rather than relying on the car, you should be carrying out weekly checks and the Haynes manual has some good indicators.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Regards Oil, I use Castrol Edge in my ED30 (one of the recommended by VW) 5W-30, I bought a 4L can for my garage and have one of the 1L bottles in my boot (in one of these VW cases which is velcro'd to back of the rear seat), It's handy and keeps it out of way and is there should you need it, also includes some rubber gloves and paper funnels to guide it in if your not of the "Steady hand brigade".

Cheapest place i think is your local Asda £35 for 4L, tesco does Castrol Edge but I did not see 5W-30, only other viscosities.

If anyone knows cheaper post it up for the guy!  :happy2:

Can you mix synthetic and semi-synthetic oil?

Not sure what's in mine from it's last service.

Dont mix oil, for £35 just change it! (or for an extra £12 give it a flush inbetween)  :happy2:

Hello!

Just a quick question for those more in the know. The check oil warning light is flashing on my MFD..... yes I know i need to check the oil!
My question tho, is the TFSI known for RX8 style appetite for oil? The car was serviced at 112,000kms and now just passed 118,000kms and the light has come on.

Thanks!
my km5 gti never uses any oil from service to service changed every year or 10k miles
