Giving the Rocco her pre winter clean
« on: November 07, 2011, 07:36:13 pm »
Hi all,

With the winter months fast approaching and snow and salt on the forecast, I thought I would use the exceptionally nice weekend to give the Rocco a winter prep.

The main thing I wanted to do was get the wheels off and give them a full clean and the seal them with my new Gtechniq C5. Sorry I forgot to take before photos but the general process was as detailed below. The car hadn't been washed for 3 weeks so was minging inside and out, and the wheels hadn't been off since I bought it new in April of this year (and 5000 miles ago). Anyway, the process.

Wheels off. Cleaned inside and out with billbury wheel cleaner and a soft detailiing brush. This got rid of about 80% of the stuff on the insides of the spokes. Then a good shot of Iron-X (couldn't believe how much this got off), and this left the wheels perfectly clean and smooth except for the odd tar spots which were hit with Autosmart Tardis.

Once cleaned and dried, the wheels where then treated to to the C5, which I found quite hard to work with as I couldn't see where I had been with it being a clear liquid - but hey ho.

With the wheels off the car (on Axle stands), I power washed the undersides of the arches, and scrubbed the liners with a stiff brush with Megs APC. Painted components wiped and dried with a clean microfibre and plastics dressed with Aerospace 303.

The rest of the car was then washed (typical TBM), then Iron-X'd all over and then hit with tardis. A quick wash again then dried with waffle weave towels. Paintwork topped up with Werkstatt Gloss (I have acrylic on the car already). Plastics dressed with Aerospace 303 and tyres with megs endurance gel. Phew....onto the after photos. Total time 6 hours on the Saturday for the wheels and 4 hours on the Sunday for everything else.

Oh, before anyone comments, yes she is a little high off the ground (and yes she does need lowering) but when the photos were taken she had just come off axle stands so was sitting unusually high (she's not normally like a 4x4 - honest  )

Thanks for looking.

Looks wonderful dude. I need to spend some time with the R this weekend getting it sealed ready for winter.
If you have to ask why, you'll never understand.

Scott, I couldn't get away without treating Ange's Polo SEL to a similar clean to mine. Same products used except LSP which was P222 wax for a nice deep wet shine.

Before anyone mentions it, yes, I forgot to clean inside the arches :wall: (will do that next time) as I didn't take the wheels off this car. Any yes there are some minor cobwebs in the paiint work (not too bad for 7 months worth of washes). I just wanted to protect for the winter. I'll do a machine correction on the paint in the spring.

I'll let the photos do the talking, not as many as the Rocco.

Lovin the details

What did you use on the Polo? P222? Not heard of it. Anything like R222?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Both looking very smart Andrew,

Not having a good look around the Polo I was really looking forward to John travelling over from Sheff with his GTI, I was really impressed with the quality of the build and the golf sized interior...beautiful cars, and to top it off when he went he give it some boot and it sounded out of this world.

Keep in touch Andrew we'll have to meet up next time Scotts down for a long weekend with the new arrival next spring.
