Down on power, misfire on cylinder 3
« on: November 20, 2011, 06:44:05 pm »
Hi guys, some of you may have seen on my Members' rides thread that my car is misbehaving. Went to Awesome yesterday and was only making 133bhp for some reason, and making a terrible screeching sound higher in the rev range.

Anyhow one of the observers at the RR suggested it was a boost leak and that it might be the bung on my BSH True Seal for the DV relocation that may be loose. I went to B&Q to get a jubilee clip and when I looked under the bonnet I had a better look at the bung. It's jutted up right against the brake fluid reservoir and as the engine's moved around it's sliced a hole through the bung!

I took it to Darren today who scanned it - misfire on cyl 3 around 6500rpm, and overboost fault codes. Taped up the bung so it wasn't letting air in, cleared the codes and then booted the crap out of it up to the redline. Screeched again, engine management light flashed, it hesitated and then it was fine. Rescanned and it had a misfire on cyl 3 again, around the 6500rpm mark.

No other symptoms, completely fine when you're pottering about. No misfires or anything.

Car is a 2006/55 A3 2.0T DSG. Engine code AXX, done 45k odd. Only performance mod is a BSH True Seal.

I'll post the error codes later on as I don't have access to an SD card reader, but any ideas what it might be? It's always cyl 3 by the look of it, and always around 6500rpm

Cheers in advance,

S.

No missfire at idle?

Cylinder 3 tormented me for weeks. Plugs, Coils, Fuel filter, PCV, nothing.  New injector, Fixed.

I don't think so because it's not constant. It's fine hits 6500rpm and then starts like a switch

Cheers Mike, I was thinking an injector or the spark plug, but it had a major service in Feb time so spark plugs should have been done. No no misfire at idle, or when driving even 80% or so. Only when you redline it that screech, slight hesitation and flashing warning light

Aren't the Tru Seals and the p-flo's renound for the harmonic screech at high revs?

Try your old intake dude. And also have a butchers at your coilpack on cylinder 3 :)

Bollox forgot to check that, never even crossed my mind although I did think the spark plug possibly not gapped properly??

Here's the scan for you buddy.

The last I see a lot on the A3 when the fuels low, It doesn't let you clear the codes when the fuels low

Hmm, did you get your coil packs changed with the recent recall seeing you have an AXX engine?
Without traction power is nothing!

cheers for the help so far guys

had the coil packs done under recall about 2 months/2000mi ago so i didn't think it would be that.

i was going to put on the standard air intake and see if there's any difference, but i'm not technically minded enough to be swapping spark plugs. i know it's not hard but if you've read any of my threads lately you'd know i'm not someone to be messing with key components  :rolleye:

on my drive from Yorkshire back to Stoke i noted that when you're trying to hold a speed (i.e. 70mph on the motorway) the speedo needle does wobble up and down a bit (+/- 1 or 2mph i'd say). no jerkiness inside the car, and the rev needle is rock solid

slightly off topic:

bacillus, i noticed you had okada coil packs. what's the advantage of these?

i like this post
but coils are easy to change as well as plugs , a bit of patience and you will be armed with as much knowledge as the normal VW teccy.
the missfires i had were down to plugs , mine lasted about 8,000 miles if i was lucky.
