... The only downside is noise, and that can be engineered (new M5 for example).
That's a V8 though - they'd have to do something seriously wrong for it to sound boring, lets face it?!
I stick with my original points about the sound - I think if you buy a premium brand car higher up the engine range, part of the package needs to be soulful acoustics and I just don't think a straight four will offer that, so it would be the respective TDI engines that would take my preference if you're talking 4 cylinders (which will as per usual be slightly more economy anyway I expect.)
