Enjoyable Roads - Lake District?
« on: November 21, 2011, 09:44:30 pm »
Hi guys, I'm off to the Lakes this weekend for the missus birthday. Can anyone recommend any nice drives up that way from experience?

I remember a few passes when I was a kid in my dads Orion we had snow one year, we were stuck but my uncles mk1 Driver battled through! From that point I knew it had to be Vag, it was also my dads last Ford!

I also did the Wrynose and Hardknott Passes. Great scenery and some extreme roads. Can get the bumhole chewing the seat at times but glad I've done it. TBH I had had enough by the time I got to the end. Just wanted a nice flat straight piece of road lol.

Loads to choose from really but the A686 from Penrith to Alston is widely regarded as one of the best, the AA had it in the top ten drives in the world. Hardnot and Wrynose as stated above are excellent but consider the Newlands (Keswick to Buttermere) and Kirkstone passes as well. I'll keep an eye out for you!  :happy2:

Beware its the Grizdale stages this weekend so rally cars and spectators all over the shop around Coniston.

A686 is a bikers paradise until they hit a wall or tractor. Sundays are to be avoided at all costs.

Yeah it is but the majority of them should have now tucked them up for winter with a bit of luck, can ruin a nice ride out though, went up to Hartside a few weeks ago and there must have been over a hundred or more up there, one clown had fell off on the hairpin just by the bothy so the police were everywhere.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'll write these down. The forecast is looking a bit wet and windy but it will be a nice change from Wolverhampton traffic! :driver:

Ahem to Wrynose pass!! I went up with my mum (she was driving) in her 206 cc with the dog in the back, that was fun!!!

Stop at the pub half way up Kirkstone pass, great views on a good day!

were in the lakes for christmas again, got snowed in last year, some great roads, but all can be a bit dodgy if the weather isn't great, so take care :happy2:

Some great roads around the Lakes, especially now it's getting a bit quieter at this time of year. I'll try and get some pics up from when i was last up Honister Pass later on.

I'm a biker and most summer days and nights I can be found on Hartside (A686), Kirkstone Pass or through the Lakes, absolutely brilliant roads!

Have fun and drive safe :happy2:
