Controversial rumblings from VW's 'R' brand bosses about the future shape of fast VWs: "The future is diesel and all-wheel-drive."
These are the words of Ulrich Richter, R GmbH's executive director, speaking to US blog site Autoblog at the LA show.


This means (though this is taking an Olympic-standard long jump to draw such a conclusion) that we could well be seeing an oil-burning 'R' car (VW Golf GTD R, anyone?) before too long. Which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your prejudices/predelictions...

More universally encouraging news comes from R's assertion that low weight is more effective for economy than hybrid tech. "You can get the same efficiency [as a hybrid] by dropping 100 kilos," says Richter. Which, as much as it might be a statement of the bleedin' obvious to many, is also good news for those who like their fast VW's with a side-serving of agility, and not an extra lump of dead-weight battery

This sort of thing does worry me, but I want a new car but I just know that won't be long before fuel will be £2 per litre and having a decent petrol car would be just daft, so would not surprise me at all if vw do that, only seems to be bm who are trying to work around the problem by introducing good petrol engines that are efficient ( new 328 sounds like a fantastic engine). I think it will have to be a blue motion and a toy for me as these fast diesels do nothing for me personally.

It's not the chassis of diesels I have a problem with, it's the engine, I know lots of people love diesels but I just don't, I know they can be fast but the way the engine delivers its power just does not seem to work for me when pushing on, no feel whatsoever, and from experience the more power the worse it is! I wouldn't want another fwd hot hatch anyway, but yeah they are a good hot hatch diesel

I've had diesel and 4wd before, wasn't a match made in heaven either 

Does this mean the Polo R will be a diesel next year

i would like to drive the new VAG 2.0 twin turbo TDI that was featured in the A3 TDI CLubsport quattro concept before i pass judgement... whenever they get their finger out and release it that is.

tbh i drove the A1 1.4T with DSG and stop/start for a bit and it's a good bit of kit. considering all VAG cars will have this tech soon i think there will still be place for a 2.0T to power higher model cars like the S3 and Golf R... just a shame the R32 is gone, i would have loved to see a Golf R36 with the Passat R36 engine

In the USA and Canada they have the 335dX which is a 3 series saloon 3.0d twin turbo 4x4. Brilliant to drive.

Sub. There is a guy with a mk4 R36 Turbo.... Of which i tried to have a race with, before i found out what it was.  Fast!!

If you are on about Slapbladders Mk4 then it wasn't an R36 motor and the last I heard about a year or so ago he had just bought the turbo kit but was having some disagreements around sponsorship with the site.

Yeah... He's not a fan of R32OC. I think it's awful when forum members have issues with sponsors.... ;-)

He did get a r36 motor in it.

The original 3.6 was from a Toerag non-FSI and not R36.

I can't view that forum but the falling out was about his continual pushing of C2 Motorsports who were no longer R32OC sponsors.
