XL & non XL tyre on same Axel?

Ok,
I have got myself some winter wheels, some mint Genuine VW 16" Adelaide EOS wheels same as these:

Booted with 3 x 6-7mm Barum Bravuris 2 tyres http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Barum/Bravuris-2.htm and one single tyre having around 2 mm left.................... all for £150.


One of the 4 tyres only had around 2mm left on it, so I scoured the t'internet for a part worn, same pattern.

It arrived today, is the same Brand (Barum Bravuris 2) so same tread pattern, same speed rating and size, but it is an XL (Extra Load) variant.

Can this be on the same axel as a non XL tyre?

should really be fitted in axel sets mate. but should be ok.

Thanks mate...all me Googling skills turned nothing up, other than the debate of DO I Need XL or Not.....nothing seems to be out there.

They are the same speed rating (W), and type, brand tread pattern, just slightly higher load, so should be ok, just didn't want to be doing somthing ultra silly....in being prepared to be safe for the Winter !!

xl tyre being the same speed rating is the main thing mate. we often up the speed rating on cars at work ie 205/55/16 91h - 205/55/16 91v if there on back order
on a mot im sure they could only give you a advisory if they were mixed
The requirement is on type, size, and structure only
225/45 being the type, 17 being the size, and radial being the structure
Speed and load ratings only apply to MoT tests for Class VII vehicles

i can get you a number for michelin tec when im back in work tomorrow if that helps mate

That would be great, cheers mate...but I think you have answered well enough to help me sleep much easier, going to get the tyre fitted on Friday and swap over the wheels at the weekend...then the weather can do its worst !!

Providing the load index is the same then I would not worry.

However I would not fit different load index tyres on the same axle.
Are the tyres a high enough load index for the car, as you do not mention what they are.

3 tyres are 93 W and one is 97W

The 97 will have a much stiffer sidewall than the other 3, 97 is probably a van tyre? and it will handle completely differently to the other 3, personally I would not use it - but I also like to use 4 matching tyres, others see no problem in using 4 different brands (and possibly all different load index as well).

For example my (much heavier than a Golf) Skoda Superb estate only needs 94 XL load index tyres.
