Just getting a GT TDI 170
« on: November 23, 2011, 11:06:42 pm »
Hey guys.

Im picking up my mk5 on sunday... a 2008 GT sport TDI 170.

Looking for advice really on this particular model..? do's and don't's..?

Iv heard something about the injectors, so need to phone VW to see what they have to say about it.

What sort of realistic MPG should i expect from it? Iv changed from a mk4 that i get an avg of 45 with mixed sorts of runs.

Any general advice would be appreciated.

cheers guys

ok..
Do:
Ask VW warranty to have it booked in for the Piezo Injector check (iffy batch) and get them changed Free of Charge, that was a £3500 bill I dodged ! :drinking:

The number is 0800 0833 920

MPG:
Prior to my injector change I struggled to get over 49 Mpg on a 35 mile commute (76 miles / day) on the motorway to work and back.
After the injectors were changed I now regulary hit 62+ Mpg on the commute (according to the On board computer) I will verify what I am getting when I fill up again on Saturday. That is driving around 60 MPH on Cruise control....being chilled  :popcornsoda:

I also changed from a MK4 (had it for 8 years) and the GT 130 served me well....the MK5 is a much "newer" more advanced feel, more technology for sure and the handling does outperform the MK4, I had Neuspeed trickery to get my Mk4 upto snuff  :driver:

Don't:
expect it to be quiet and more refined.
Just because it is newer and higher technology diesel, doesn't mean quieter...for all the increase in bhp you get a noise penalty.

Oh and tyre road noise on my 18" charleston's is really annoying.

One other don't.....don't go mad with the technology and believe the "range" computer e.g. you have 10 miles left....it can be innacurate, although I managed a good 40 miles on ZERO miles range..

Thats great, thanks for the number, il give them a call tomorrow even though i haven't got the car yet. Does it matter about not being the first owner and still wanting it done FOC?

I didn't think much of the MPG when i test drove it, but i put that down to giving it a bit of a hammering as well as a carful drive, also not being out that long. It would be nice to have close to or better what my mk4 mpg is - that 130 remapped to 175.

As for the handling, i dont think it will take much to out perform the 4, im really not that impressed with it if im honest, even if it is the 'GT' spec!

Cruise is another thing i want again, did you fit / have it fitted.... difficult??

sorry about the 10 million questions!

 cheers

Didn't see the don't bit!

More noisey? mehh... never mind, il just have to build the stereo around that! Got to rip all that out of the mk4 before going to swap them on sunday... that will be a nice rush on saturday to do all that, as well as take the xenons out!!

Thanks for the tip on the range - thats something i never got round to having activated, although i had it on my passat and found it pretty good, always went to zero and knew there was plenty in there still!!

cheers

Sort of a thread hijack but on topic of the injectors, Ade you say to ring up VW and get the car booked in to check if they are a faulty batch. Can this be done whenever? They don't have to fail first? Do you know if this can be done through vagcom and what would to look for if so?

As for Screech's question, like you I made the same change only I went from a mapped PD150. The mk4 was quicker but felt like a tank to drive compared to this. I usually average between 48-53mpg on a 13 mile commute. Mostly national speed limit A roads. As for the noise I think its loads quieter than the mk4 but if you've had Diesels in the past then you know what to expect.

Answer to Screech, no, you don't have to be the first owner, and one thing to consider, always ask for "goodwill" as VW policy is Goodwill payment to any car upto 5 years old !

MAtto - No, VAGCOM cannot be interogated to tell you the batch number, this is stamped on the injectors themselves and as such, the rocker cover has to come off and the injectors inspected visually to confirm the batch number, even VW warranty think Diagnostics is what they use, but this is untrue.

And also, no they do not have to fail first, mention that VOSA are on the case and that you have read too many complaints on the internet about them failing when on the motorway at high speed and you do not want to be in an accident, they will then dial your closest dealership and put you through.

Personal opinion, VW are a bit naughty with this one, considering you lose all power and ignition circuit fails, it is a danger and should be recalled....I guess they dont want all the Golf GT 170's and Passats coming back too quickly to clog up the network of dealerships with £3500 of replacement work ! :fighting:

My car (170bhp GT tdi) is in today to get the injectors removed to see the serial numbers. If they are in the dodgy batch they will be getting replaced FOC, if they are not, the dealer will charge 1 hour labour for the work.

I'm the second owner, the car has a fvwsh and has done 53k miles.

I phone VW customer services and all they asked for was my reg no and the girl checked and came back, said my car was right in the middle of the dodgy batch and that I can book it into my local VW dealer to get the injectors and wiring loom checked and replaced if necessary.

There are no issues with the injectors that are in the car just now, and I said that to VW, but I also said I was aware there is a potential problem.

VW could not have been more helpful, they contacted my local dealer and then back to me to say the authority to do the job had been given and to call the dealer to arrange booking the car in.

I arranged for the dealer to collect the car from my work today and take it for the inspection. Hopefully the injectors will be in the dodgy batch and I'll get a brand new set.

I am expecting to get the car back tonight.

If I were you I'd give VW a call with the reg no. They can tell if the work may need done or if it has been done in the past.

Regarding mpg, I get about 40-45 driving mainly short distances. This translates to around 500-550ish miles on a tank

Update:

Advantage VW Stirling called me at 13.00 to say the car was ready. Obvously I asked if the injectors had been replaced?  The guy says no, there are no faults stored in the memory so there is nothing wrong with it. We just put it on the diagnostics!
At this point the "wee glesga man" burst out of me and I had a right go, ranting and quoting know facts regarding these feckin' injectors!

The upshot was he went off saying he'd make enquiries and call me back. He didn't. Two hours later (fuming!) I called him. He said they phoned VW and were told to remove an injector tell them the numbers off it, which ironically is the job the car was booked in to have done. This they did and VW authorised them to replace all four, and not a penny to pay!

So that was me, blood pressure back to normal and "wee glesga guy" back in the box.

Result!

Sorry for hijacking your thread  :happy2:

Thanks for the heads up guys.

Sounds like your dealings weren't too great, but at least you've had them done.

Iv just phoned them on the number given to me above.... all i can say is... useless  :booty:

I explained that iv not actually got the car yet but want to have it sorted as soon as i get it. He was going on about its difficult to tell me as iv not actually got the car... huh?!
He couldn't confirm that it was built whilst the bad batch were out or not (like yours did) and that i should get the garage iv brought it from (not vw dealer) to sort it. No, i want to sort it myself so i know its actually been done and not just told 'yes sir we've had that done for you its all ok' !!

I asked that if i did already have the car how would we go about it, and he said we do nothing, you need to go straight to your local VW dealer to get it sorted.

So i think il wait 'til next week and phone them up again!

cheers.

Numpties......all you need is to have your Vehicle Reg and or chasis number and off they go.

well i gave them a call today. as above they were unable to tell me if my car was affected.  its going in next friday to have the injectors removed to see.  they said it may need new injectors and a wiring loom.  i pick up the tab for checking which will be peanuts if they are found to be faulty.  i was ready for a battle but they offered everything straight away.

how have others got on?  how about posting the year and what happened for cars that have been back?

thanks for the tip off

Went through VW UK and it did not cost me a penny. Local dealer had them out and all was well. VW picked up the tab no questions.

Sorry I did not make it clear. They checked them out and are not from the faulty batch so did not need replacing. They did not charge me for the labour to do this unlike some others it seems. Mine is an 07 bought privately in August this year, I am the second owner and it had only done 25k.
