What model is my SatNav (potentially!)
« on: November 24, 2011, 08:27:33 am »
Hi all,

So looking at an 06 GTi with factory sat nav. It also has an awfule cradle for some p.o.s Nokia fitted. What model is the sat nav likely to be (buttons along the bottom) and does anyone do a cradle to replace the Nokia one with a Blackberry job.....or is there any kit out there that I can use just to hold a Blackberry and remove the Nokia kit (I'm guessing there will be holes in the dash otherwise?)?

I want to know if I can plumb iPod easily into the sat nav unit is all. Then I'll look into adding an amp and some 6x9's.....unless you folks recommend doing it a different way?

Thanks all  :happy2:

hard to tell without a picture, some aftermarket cradle could've also been added.

Did it look like this -

Should just be able to remove the cradle matey, however depending how they have fitted it will depend if your left with holes etc! Got any pictures?

Also speak to demon666 regarding your HU and getting iPod connectivity, he should be able to sort you out with the correct kit but I;m pretty sure the normal MDI kits will work.

Do you have an armest and if so does it have a 6 CD changer in it? If so this can be easily swapped for a unit containing an iPod Dock.

Hope this helps and stick some pictures up of that cradle!

Thanks Betty02  :congrats:

I'm starting to think that maybe I should just swap the sat nav (is this one an rns510?) for a Pioneer job with Bluetooth etc, unless the factory unit is really good (don't know much about 'em....too many Beemers recently!).

It does have the 6 cd unit in the armrest.....I'll try to sort a piccy, but IT ain't my strong point :fighting2:

There's a guide on here on how to upload pictures ;)

If you have a 6CD changer in the armest then your laughing, it's a simple box change there and plug and play will take 5 minutes max! That will be you full ipodded up then (is that a new word?)!

In regards to the RN 510 it is truly top notch but i opted for the RNS 310 instead, it;s exactly the same with a slightly smaller screen and no internal hard drive, however it has the option for an SD card. I paid around £300 for my head unit brand spanking new off eBay, that included all GPS adapters and everything. I had the gold 3 weeks when I got that and fitted it myself within no time at all.

Might be an option to look at? I didn't need to change my CANbus either (this is needed for many cars that wasnt the RNS510 upgrade)

Hope all this helps, but if you have the CD changer then the iPod is easy, cradle should be removable and then you should be good to go!

Your sat nav is the MFD2, an RNS will be a nice upgrade! :happy2:

For clarity, and MDI kit will NOT work with an MFD2 - its the iPod dock cradle or cd changer on this model only (or an aux if you wish)
