Tyre Profile question
« on: November 27, 2011, 02:32:59 am »
I have had a nosey round on the tinternet but can't seem to find an answer.

What im wondering is does the size of the tyre profile affect the rim it will fit on? I'm asking because currently my car has 225/40/18 tyres. But I can get anything upto a 225/60/18 so wanted to know if fitting a tyre like that would cause issues?

I was thinking of 225/45/18 or maybe 225/50/18 but no higher.

Cheers :happy2:

I think your speedo will be out by quite a bit if you go bigger.
Also the width is a percentage of the profile I believe so if you go bigger it will go wider?
So it should be ok especially if you are running an 8j rim instead of OEM 7.5j(?) as it would not be as stretched.
Back to the speedo thing, I believe if you are re sizing the wheel i.e 19" then they always go down a size on the profile to make it fit and keep the speedo reading correct. Irrelevant I know but just saying.

Hi Carl  :happy2:

I went for larger profile tyres on my Astra Estate (workhorse) and whilst it looked great on the astra (4x4 look) I think it might look wrong on the gti  :ashamed:
I remember at the time, I had no probs with fitment, but the speedo was out.

Here are the details of the tyres you mentioned, and the differences against stock one

The 40/45/50 profile defines the height of the tyre as a percentage of the width.

As said you will affect the speedo reading which I believe can be corrected in VCDS but it will also look a bit strange.

Cheers. It was just something I was mulling over as Camskill only offer Michelin PSS in 225/45/18. However at £200 a tyre :surprised: I'll give it a miss

I will be going PS3 at some point. I don't think it justifies PSS's.

Out of interest, what's the reason for wanting a higher profile, is it for extra ride comfort (for Mrs F and bubba) or are you just asking out of curiosity?  You could the other way and get a 235/40 R18 to beef out the tyre wall?

I was looking at the PSS tyre. But also it was to make it a bit more comfortable. Not sure a 235 tyre would fit the Neptunes.

Don't ask me where, but I have seen 235's on Zeniths, which have the same dimensions as the Neptune.  Get yourself a set of 17's, you know you wanna!!
