Rain Sensor in the Rear View Mirror
« on: November 30, 2011, 10:12:51 am »
Hi Gents,

I've had my windscreen replaced following yet another hit from a bloody brick.... Soooo as I posted ages ago - my auto rain sensing wipers have never really worked following Hurdy having to replace the screen earlier.

As I discovered today, the reason was because the sensor seems to be bonded to the screen from factory, so when the previous windscreen replacement was done, the sensor had to be pried off which has left it slightly unstable (as it has a load of bonding stuff on it.)

It's been reseated during this refit and does not work a little bit/intermittantly, but now I know what it is and how easy it is to get at, I'd like to replace the sensor. I wondered if anyone can help me find the part code so I can get one ordered from VW?

Thanks
Regards
Matt

i had this palava when i was retrofitting my rain/light sensor with a used sensor from a scrappies and it turns out that the repair kit is only suitable if your original rain sensor is i *think* 'AF' or later, i may be wrong on this, but it certainly depends on which part number you have whether or not the repair kit will 'fit'

failing that, i managed to snag a brand new rain sensor off ebay for £30 on auction and its the one which is compatible with the repair kit too for future 'protection'

that one in fact looks like the chaps already fitted the repair kit to his sensor and thats what he's selling on, failing that, the place that fitted your windscreen for you ought to have some of the 'jelly' anyway i would have thought! the chap that fitted mine didnt have any with him that day and said to swing round to their 'office' so someone could squirt some on and fit in for me (turned out the second hand sensor was dodgy anyway hence replacement!)

Thanks for the replies gents!!

So Eddie, is the repair kit a load of the bonding stuff then? The sensor seems to work, but it is covered in what looks like a sheen of rock hard but clear resin... I had the feeling (just a gut thing) that I would need to clean off to make it 100%!!
