Oil Consumption
« on: December 04, 2011, 03:22:24 pm »
Hello!

Just a quick question for those more in the know. The check oil warning light is flashing on my MFD..... yes I know i need to check the oil!
My question tho, is the TFSI known for RX8 style appetite for oil? The car was serviced at 112,000kms and now just passed 118,000kms and the light has come on.

Thanks!

if you take it easy it takes no oil. But pushed could use some. In the service manual says it could use up to  1l per 1000km. Mine only needed a oil refill after rolling road :-))

it's totally normal and nothing to worry about

As above.  It doesn't use too much if you pootle about at less than say 3k rpm but if you like to use the whole rev range it can drink oil pretty quick - its normal.

Don't wait for the light - check it earlier! The light is telling you it's low (dangerous) so catch it with a top up before the light comes on  :happy2:

As above, should be part of the weekly check.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Seriously, i dont know how long you have had your car, but if you haven't checked your oil for 6000kms then you need to have a chat with yourself in the mirror, and ask the question 'am i responsible  enough to be driving a car on public roads'. Honestly! even my 2 year old knows that TFSI engines can use lots of oil.

Really poor advice, no two cars are the same.  :fighting:

Thanks for the advice all. Can you recommend what brand of oil you use?

@Top Cat, as a mod on this site I would have expected a bit better tbh. Not all of us are as technically advanced as your two old. I have a general idea about cars, engines, how they work, what they need, etc, but I am not a specialist or have ever claimed to be. I posted on here seeking advice from ppl with more experience in these matters, the whole point of a forum like this I believe.

Checking your car on a weekly basis is good in theory, but how many ppl actually do? Do you top up by a tea spoon of oil each time on your weekly checks?Surely you do realise that not everyone is as anal about their cars.  I have the car maintained according to manufacturers specifications at a VW garage. I had the car recently serviced and was surprised by the large consumption of oil in such a short period of time, hence this post. As a first time VW owner, I was unaware of the thirst for oil that the TFSI has, perhaps I missed that Blue Peter episode.

Finally my driving skill is not in question here, having more driving qualifications then most ppl, I think I am more then responsible enough to drive a car on public roads. Perhaps the question should be, if you treat fellow forum members with such little respect, should you be a mod on this site? I came on this site looking for advice and help, if I wanted a lecture, I know where I can turn. Maybe your two year can teach you that if you cant say anything ncie......

 :congrats:

Well put, TC your reply was tad harsh, I only assumed you knew the guy the way that was worded, however that seems not to be the case, maybe a bad day at the office?

Anyhoo, I was told by a few members on here that its normal for the TFSI engine (if driven with some gusto) to use upto 0.5L per 500 miles.

I check my oil every 2 weeks and after having covered 500 miles checked my oil and it took 0.35L to top it back up to full.

Well your oil light was on which means there is a good chance your engine could be permanently damaged ( as per manufactures warning ).

And if you cant be bothered to find one minute a week to check your oil  and think going 6 thousand KMS without checking is acceptable then you deserve everything you get in life.
As for me being a mod, i think i am perfectly polite throughout this forum, but if you do a search i always answer [ 'i dont check my oil' ] threads the same. I find it incredible that people can spend a fair bit of time on here and still not check their oil.    :surprised:

Kind regards TC.

I don't think that's right.... Oil light on means that you need to top up the oil as the level is low. But it doesn't mean that the engine is damaged. Also I am sure the manufacturer set it up as warning light hence it's still safe to drive with light on for some time but needs to be topped up shortly. This is warning light and not you can dump your car you fool light as some suggest. Also I wouldn't be bothered checking my oil every 6k km.... Once light on I will top up

That's my view

as "enthusiasts" i know we're meant to take more interest in our cars than joe public, but the OP has a point in that VW built the GTI for the masses, and the masses don't check their oil weekly and they get on just fine. if there was a need to check it weekly there wouldn't be an oil warning light.

i used to check mine fairly frequently, but my car seems to be using less oil than before so now it hasn't been checked for a few weeks. now the weather is getting colder i'll be paying more attention to my car so it's less likely to break down, but i really don't think checking it every week is necessary.

You are both wrong. On a Mk 5 golf GTI, the oil light is not a warning you need to top up. It is telling you the oil light has reached a critical level.  :happy2:

i'm not saying that you should let it fall to that level, jsut pointing out that the vast, vast, VAST majority of people would do and you don't hear of 2.0Ts seizing up and down the country.

i'm just saying checking it every week is overkill. if you've got the time to do it then great. i don't so i check it every few weeks or so. i haven't come a cropper yet.

Yes but loads of people have, i am not saying it completely kills an engine but it will do long term damage, and their have been people on here who have lost engines because of this, they just dint post it up.    It is up to every individual how often they check their oil and tyre pressures. Just like it's up to me to think they are a fool if they read on here that they drink oil and then still dint check it at all.
The sad thing is if the engine does take battering the owners then sell them on to members on here which is part of our community.  :happy2:
