"Stop! check coolant"
« on: December 04, 2011, 08:50:03 pm »
Got this message intermittently on start-up. Coolant level is fine though. So I assume (both from previous VAG knowledge and a search on here) that it's just a dodgy sensor. Is that right?

If so, how much would it be to get fixed? (parts and labour). I'm assuming a dealer would be somewhat expensive, so any recommendations for good indys in Coventry/Solihull/Birmingham/Leamington/Warwick sort of way would be useful.

Many thanks.

it does sound like the sensor is furbed mate, its not a massive job to change as for cost if it came into my work it would be about £15 to fit a new one plus the cost of the part

Cold weather seems to trip the warning in my R. Stop and start again and it clears.
Only 250.1bhp - but with that noise, who cares?

Its the sensor inside the coolant bottle pal. There prone for failing and i Have the exact same problem. Unfortunately the sensor is fixed inside the bottle so the whole thing has to be replaced. I had a fabia vrs that went and it cost me £14 +vat and about 15mins to exchange. Hope this helps

I had this on my mk4 years ago, gave the metal prongs on the inside of the bottle a scrape with a screwdriver to clear it of a build up of crap and it never did it again.

Thanks for the replies folks, much appreciated. Good to hear the part is cheap, but I dare say the dealer will try to charge me an hours labour for it! And for some more coolant. But will give them a call. I could still do with a good indy recommendation really - I'm not too keen on using the dealers to be honest. Maybe I need a seperate thread for that?

Cheers, will try this first then!

Dealer won't even quote without seeing the car. They want it for an hour to do some "diagnostics". Apparantly that is normally £49+VAT but they will do this for free. And then presumably tell me how many £100s it will cost!!
