Flat Battery Issue with Stereo?
« on: December 05, 2011, 04:03:39 pm »
Right then.

Currently... well until last night when I ripped it out I had fitted the Apline X305 unit which needs a "live" feed to run....

I run this from the fuse block from the far right-hand side empty terminal.

Bingo... I have power....

6 months ago I went on holiday for a week and came back to a flat battery... thought it was just a dead one so picked up a new one and away I went...

a few weeks ago I went away for the weekend and came back to a nearly dead battery.. quick jump and off I go...

Yesterday after not driving the car for 1 day it was dead again!! jumped it and we had life!!!

the only thing I can think of is that the stereo is drawing power from the battery all the time from the live feed..

Anyone else know of any issues with after market stereos and what have you done to fix the issue?

or do you think its something else?

i would see what current is being drawn from your battery when the cars idle, remove the radio fuse you connected it to, and see what happens if it makes a difference

or

take the radio out and leave the car for a few days?

if the head unit needs a constant 12v i would guess its that.  shouldnt draw that much though, what the hells it doing in standby

Yeah I'm running around with a unit in at the mo to test it.... its crazy... I remove the fascia each night after holding the off button I know it needs the live feed to keep the memory but thats it...

Did you take the live from a permenant live, or a switched live?

If the latter then you should have no problem with battery drain from the stereo. If the former, then try the latter
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Took it direct from the battery.... as per the instructions (Yellow wire) if you don't it looses its memory every time you turn the ignition off

Only the ones circled in red are fitted

The Golf mk5 stereo doesn't have a switched live natively in the headunit loom. Does this unit have a quadlock to ISO loom?

I'd suggest you find a switched live from the fusebox (or somewhere around the centre console, should be a chunky cable there for testing) and run a cable wherever you to your RED (ignition live). This way it maintains memory but should switch off with the key out.

You can buy Quadlock CAN-BUS adapters for aftermarket units - this gives a switched live without the addition of other circuits.
