Back depends on what year the car is but will likely involve removing the whole mechanism.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Might be able to prise off the metal VW bit on the rear badge.

The front VW badge can be removed by pushing it in and turning it (can't remember if clockwise/anticlockwise) but this has a good chance of breaking the clips. Better to remove the grille (two screws at top, two under where number plate plinth is) and then undo it from behind.

Yeh just push in and turn anti clockwise and it pulls out. be carefull not to break one of the three clips. I broke one but it still went back on fine. The back is a bit more tricky.
Remove the 2 screws in internal tailgate cover and pull very firmly to remove. (use an window scraper or similar to lever it if need be) then

Remove the connector block and the 3 Torx screws securing boot handle. (you may need to loosen the wiper motor to get to the bottom screw)

may just take the gamble by twisting!

if not isnt it the torx on the top ? in the bonnet?

As I said, two at the top and two under the number plate plinth. All torx I think.
