I'm suprised no ones has said this but I'd be going for a 2003 ish Polo 1.9 tdi sport with that budget.  60mpg +. £95 tax and really nippy!

Or a polo 1.4 tdi. £30 tax and 60+ mpg

Or seat Ibiza tdi in the same guise as the polo

Ibiza 1.9 pd 130 sport. Stg1 map = 180hp and 300 ftlb with massive levels of reliability and economy.
