Would you buy this?
« on: December 11, 2011, 09:30:34 pm »
Hi All

Looking for some advice as potentially buying my first mk5 GTI THIS MORNING!!! The car I am going to see is on an 07 plate with high mileage (74,000) but has full VWSH and cambelt change in 2010.  The only thing stopping me for going for it is that in 11 months it went 19,000 miles between services (e.g. serviced at 40,000 miles then not again until 59,000 11 months later - no indication of long lifes service/oil being used).  It has had another VW service since at 70,000.

Would this put anyone off buying a mk5 gti as I really like it and it's advertised at a good price, £8,000

Many thanks

Alex

i choose longlife servicing on my car (*awaits blazing from other members*)

personally i wouldn't see it as an issue. if the car has been used under low load (i.e. long motorway journeys) then the engine is under less stress and it needs servicing less. personally i don't feel that means the car is less well looked after.

my car at the minute is about 18k (or 10 months) between services, and it's not indicating a service for at least another 2500 miles. but it's been doing a lot of motorway miles in that time so i'm not fussed.

the minute i go stage 1, however, i'll be going time/distance servicing.

3 or 5 door? DSG or manual? 17 or 18 inch Monzas? Interlagos cloth or leather? Any options?

If it's on T&D servicing it would worry me, but if it's on Longlife it wouldn't. Is it from a dealer?

It's a 3 door in a metallic blue. Don't think it was set to long life servicing when it went 19000 miles but had been done by main dealer so would they not have used an oil capable of lasting 19000 without a change (eg fully synthetic?). Test drove car today and ran well with no funny noises etc from engine or turbo ? I need to make a decision by the morning. Help!

If you're unsure then walk away. If you don't then you'll always think about it. It's not like they're thin on the ground !
