Reminder to check tyre pressures
« on: December 17, 2011, 02:42:05 pm »
Just a friendly reminder for fellow members to check their tyre pressures as part of the usual winter prep. ive just come back from holiday and checked mine,  all 4 tyres were down by 4 psi compared to a month ago when it was relativley warmer. alot of people forget to check tyre pressures if the tyres look fine.

Hope this helps

How much pressure does a tyre have to lose for the tyre pressure monitor to alert you?

No, just when you change the pressure.

To explain both questions... the tyre pressure monitor works by detecting the suspension levels on all 4 wheels.. if one appears lower, i.e when you get a puncture, it raises the alarm. if all 4 tyres are flat or lose pressure  evenly, the sensors wont detect any abnormalities with the suspension as everything is even
i Remember the last time i had a puncture, i had 22psi left in the tyre after the tyre pressure alarm went off.

this is what im led to believe of how it works. im more than happy to be corrected if this isnt the case.
I personaly maintain 36 psi in my tyres regardless of the weather.

Yup - it's a passive system instead of an active one so there's no actual tyre pressure monitor.

I think the last time I had a puncture, the pressure had dropped from 37psi to around 26 and that was after driving over 30 mph for a few mins.

If you can't do weekly checks, check'em every time you fill up.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

TPMS on the Golf works via the ABS sensors Rich, it detects the difference in rotational circumference/speed of a deflating or deflated tyre compared to the set reference  when fully inflated  :happy2:

Aren't weekly checks a bit overkill? Every time I've checked them they haven't changed at all. Even when I put my winter wheels on the pressures hadn't moved, even though they'd been in storage for 8 months.
