Oil Pressure......
« on: December 17, 2011, 11:26:27 pm »
Was heading to my mates earlier on tonight and just before I got there the small red oil can symbol came on with the words 'STOP, Oil Pressure, Engine Off'

I stopped the engine straight away and checked the oil which I thought maybe smelt a bit like fuel?! The oil levels were fine. I waited a couple of minutes then drove the car about another 150 yards into my mates drive with no warning light on. The car is an 06 GTI, 44k miles, DSG and the only engine modification is a TBE

Anyone got any ideas as to what this could be?! I'm going to pick it up with my van and trailer tomorrow and drop it off at the garage on Monday

Cheers,
Matt

TFSI oil does smell a bit petrolly, I've been told that this is normal.

oil smell is normal, what were the engine conditions when light came on? under high load? off throttle?

No just slowing down towards a set of traffic lights. I'd warmed the car up properly before revving it too hard and was in D mode driving normally, I hadn't been thrashing it about, the roads were too icy for that

It could be something as simple as that Darren but I obviously didn't want to risk anything so got my pickup and trailer and took it to my local specialist that I normally use, will see in the morning

Well the car has been in the garage for a bit now and apparently the guy can't find anything wrong with it apart from a slight misfire, he's took the car out for a decent drive and couldn't get the light and warning back on

He's keeping it this week to do an oil pressure test e.t.c but he's not sure what it could be

Anyone else any ideas?!

Cheers,
Matt

Oil pressure test would've been the first thing I did TBH. I've had problems in the (distant) past with faulty pressure switches, and a replacement sorted it.

Long and short is it's either low oil pressure, or faulty warning system.
Sarcasm for free. Anything after that can only be considered as a bonus.

Just because you think you know something, doesn't make you an expert if you've just read it on the internet, y'know.

Well to hopefully finish this topic off now....

Got the car back today and all seems fine although I havn't drove it much. He did an oil pressure test on it and everything came back fine so he just replaced the switch as a precaution

Off down to Leeds for the weekend tomorrow night so hopefully it doesn't start playing up on the journey there or back. Once it's been ok for a couple of weeks, its remap time :driver:

After being fine for nearly a month it's done it again :sad1:

I've done about 500miles without it happening but the light has just came on again. I had been driving through town nice and quietly for about 10miles. I was getting nearer home out of town and was turning out of a road end. I accelerated hard in 1st and 2nd gears (manual mode) then reached 60 and cruised along behind a van. About half a mile later the light came on for the first time since I got the car back. I pulled over and turned the engine off and back on, drove for another half a mile and it came on again. I did the same again and made it home.

Nick from r tech posted he had the same problem with a gti,it turned out to be the oil pick up in the sump was full of gunge

I've just spoke to my mate who was a VW mechanic for 9 years to see if he had any ideas, he seems to think it will be the strainer in the oil feed pipe getting blocked, preventing enough oil being sucked up by the pump when the car is under load.
Think I'm going to have to get it booked it at the dealers and get the sump off and see if there is anything obvious. By the way, It was serviced  4,000 miles ago

Anyone else have any ideas as to what it could be, I was booked in for a Stage 2 Map a week on Saturday but it looks as thougim going to have to cancel that :sad1:
