Slight crunch into second gear

Good morning,

I have recently noticed a very slight crunch whilst shifting up into second gear. The crunch is barely audible but I can feel it through the gear stick.

It only happens on cold starts and the first time I shift into second.

Should I be concerned and could this be a sign of an impending failure?

when was the gear box oil changed last? if it was me i would get it done A.S.A.P,

I do not have any documentation to state when it was last done; however, the vehicle had a major service from VW in August which should include a check of the gearbox oil level and no issues were mentioned.

Do you still think I should change it and is it an easy DIY job?

Pretty easy to do, just make sure you get some syringes as its a pig to get the oil back into the box. There are two plugs, one on the bottom of the box (drain) and one on the front (fill). Here's an overview on how to do it.

- Jack the car up, front and back to make sure its level.
- Remove both plugs (might be worth ordering two new ones for what they cost)
- Leave it to drain
- Refit the base plut
- Top back up with the syringe (there's a small lip in side the gearbox, thats your fill indicator as it'll start to overflow at that point)
- Refit the second plug

Job done. Seemed to help with my old notchy second, however I found the biggest cure came in the form on a Forge Quick-shift.
