^ Useful to know, cheers Dave.

Is it as flexible as VCDS i.e. adjusting electronics, clearing error codes & acquiring diag output? Being nearly three years into the VAG scene with regular VCDS use, I'd find it hard to jump to BMW without knowing there's something as capable for playing with the 330D. I've looked at these and the 120D/123D too, so the need to tweak would be just as much

I'll keep the ownership based questions so it's useful for anyone else looking at them:

How easy is it to do an oil change on these, just as easy and accessible as on the MK5?

We have tuned 100+ 177hp bmw's and never had any reliability issues. Our own 177hp 320d was mapped st just 3k miles and now has 117k miles, still as good as the day it was bought.

(Sticking with the original theme) I've gotta be honest but the next motor purchase needs to be as close to 50mpg combined mixed driving and 600 miles from a fully brimmed tank as possible, which has got me looking at the 325d manual.

Same engine as the 330d I understand, just a smaller turbo and lower power output in the 325d from what I've seen?
Most manual drivers blogs' I've seen reckon they see 49mpg ish combined which I think is very steady efficiency for a heavy ish' straight 6 TDI.

Having looked at some videos on the tube I get the impression a map and downpipe helps these to produce a nice sound?

The 325Ds have a single turbo and the 330/335Ds have twin turbos. I have a 525D (same 3 litre engine) and there is nothing like a smooth 6 cylinder TDI.

I offer 2 maps on a stock 330d 231hp. First makes 275ish hp with 65ftlb gain in torque and the other makes 295hp with an extra 110 ftlb. The only problem is that the airbox vibrates with the higher power map and it tends to kill clutches on higher milage cars

Ideal on an auto though. Have tuned loads with the higher power option, never had any reliability issues.

Dave,

Does the stage 1 map remove the 155mph limiter and if not, can it be removed?

Will the 330d progress much past 155mph even if it could be removed?
Thanks.
Pete

Alex

Incorrect....the 330d is a single turbo, the 335d is a twin turbo

I currently run a 335d E92 coupe, running a DTUK CRD-T tuning box and make 340bhp, 510 lbs/ft torque, my car returns an average of 36/38 to the tank with mixed driving and spirited driving.
On a steady long run I can get 50 ish mpg .... Constant 70/80 on a motorway.
I'm on my second 335d coupe now, I love it, best of everything IMO....looks, power/performance, economy and nt expensive to run either.
The only negative side is the tyres, good quality branded tyres aren't cheap, but all in all, they're a great car !!

The 330d is equally as good, just not a quick and I prefer the power delivery of the twin turbo over the single turbo found on the 330d

Oh, and the auto box with sport option (paddles) would be better if your planning on a power increase, otherwise you'll be forever changing gear !!

Don't judge me by your ability !

depending on your model year, things to look out for or be aware of:

Swirl flaps
Turbo
Auto box sump
cracked alloys

Ditch the runflats if fitted.

There are a few BMW equivalents of vag com, but no where near the price of vag com.

Bavarian Technik home use is around £300, or pro is about £800.

If you want something to use on just your car, look for the program DIS.

This is what we used to use at BMW before upgrading diagnostic systems.

Have you had both manual and an auto? There seems to be significantly more auto's available, I suppose due to the lazy exec's.

Only 335/535d have twin turbo, all others (320, 330, 325... Have single) apart from123d, that has twin turbo.
