Does anybody know if it's the bulbs that have to be canbus or if its the actual ballast that is?

Neither mate, the canbus friendly HIDs have a resistor, some companies supply identical kits but if you specify error free they will include the resistor.

I already have a 6000k kit which is canbus, but I want to change the bulbs to 4300k - would it be ok to just buy some 4300k HID bulbs and swap them over?

Shouldn't be a problem, either contact the supplier of your kit or look at a company like hids4u to find replacement bulbs.  Out of interest, why are you wanting to change from 6000k?

Bit too blue for me, got the indicators set on as well so think the 4300k ones would be spot on

I would go for 5000k personally, that's what I have -

Nice and white, match my sidelights perfectly.

Scratch that I've got 8000k at the min, just found the box, so een 5000k bulbs would be better. Are 55w 5000k bulbs bit bluer then 35w 5000k bulbs?

Your 5000k's look spot on there. I sold a lot of CANBUS 5k's. Still have a few too so anyone interested drop me a pm.

Just one other question. How would I go by fitting 50/55w bulbs. Will the whole ballast need replacing or just the bulbs?
