RNS 510 playing up (another update but yet more issues)
« on: December 20, 2011, 10:06:07 am »
ok to start my RNS 510 does not go off when the key is taken out but will switch off by the button, plus the buttons on the sides light up for about 10 seconds when it's switched on then go off plus the sat nav is playing up it's not sure of where it is :( plus it likes to turn it's self off every about 1 hour of use but you can just switch back on :S every thing else works fine.

If anybody can help it's much appreciated

places to take it too, and will vagcom tell me

thanks

Secret menu has to be enabled for it to be accessible.

Could be overheating. Could be wiring.

how do I find out if it's 1 of those? is it a pull out and check job (if that's possible) or do I need to take it some were to be done by a pro?

Ive been vw and they tell me they don't repair them but they can fit new at £2000 lol or there's a new kenwood they are doing for £1000 with a free iPod, all of these are way expensive I'm sure you will agree.

who makes the rns 510? And do they do repairs?

again thanks :)

You need to get your car hooked up to VCDS I looks more like the canbus wiring to the RNS is not connected or is broken, If you can get into the service menu(secret menu) then you can check if the canbus is getting a feed but you can not check if its in single wire mode or full canbus.

What car is it in?

ive only just thought I brought a maps disc from eBay (genuine) and uploaded it a week before all this started to happen, I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the disc. It was working fine for the week but did notice that the speed cameras had gone. I think the disc was a 2009 and me thinking the rns had been in since new (2006) it was a upgraded maps. not sure if I've down graded it and that's what has messed it up. tried factory reset but all is still the same.

thinking to, a week before that the rns was saying on the map it was in Wolfsburg germany lol I had move it position to the place I was at (Stoke on Trent) not sure if this means anything to anybody to?

been down Stoke VW today and they said they can plug it in and it may tell them what's up it may not but to just plug it in is £65 lol tthen I think I would have to get it sorted myself after that, just seems like £65 for nothing to me

again thanks guys

Have a look and see who is on the vcds register closest to you and ask if they don't mind doing a scan. Should be a lot cheaper than £65!

Had the car plugged in today to see if he could find any codes to fix the rns510. but he said if he went on sat nav he couldnt get in to the codes he tryed though radio but the same. He doesn't deal with stereos so he didn't have a clue what it could be but said it mite be the same wire that the vcds goes in that's why it's not going in.

Any ideas or does that ring bells to anyone?

thanks

What firmware is your unit running?

Also being a 2006 GTI have you replaced the CAN Gateway? And if so, what one are you using now.

VCDS Scanning/Coding, RNS and MDI retrofits, and specialist mechanics services with VAGtek available - Just PM me for details.

Hi mate, I have no clue to what firmware is on it. it was in the car when I bought it 10 months ago it's been fine up till about a month ago. I'm going try to get at the back of it on Friday to see if anything is loose. would a firmware update be good for it? and where do I get the disc from?

thanks
