Smell of petrol in my engine oil!!!???
« on: December 20, 2011, 03:29:44 pm »
Was checking oil level today and noticed the smell of petrol in my engine oil! First time I've noticed it and a bit worried tbh, don't want it to cause any damage to the engine... Any ideas what it could be? Fuel consumption has been pretty poor too if that helps

Sounds like your cars running rich! If its really rich it can wash the bore and petrol get into the oil, makes the oil hon and smell like you say. Bore wash is not a good thing and thin oil won't be very protective to your engine.

Is your car tuned? Remapped?

Or it could be your hpfp or cam follower has failed.

I suggest you get it check ASAP followed by an oil change.

Cars stock apart from a panel filter, what's the HPFP? How's the best way to investigate the prob? Might book the car in for an "emergency" oil & filter change to take precautions against anything being damaged!

High Pressure Fuel Pump.

Gold 'Hitachi' object on the front right of the engine as you look at it.

Is there any sure way whether to determine if the fuel pump is goosed or would I just have to replace it, change oil/filter & go from there?

Thanks for quick replies

Is there any chance of it being the piston rings that are damaged?

It's not extremely strong but enough to smell it whilst the dipstick was out and I was checking oil! The car runs fine tho, no puffs of black smoke or no black spots on the rear bumper either :surprised: im aware these engines do run a bit rich but not sure how to determine whether this is normal or not....

From Edinburgh dude, won't be stripping the engine as its runs fine. But I'd want to go to a specialist ideally.  :happy2:

Mine also smells a little. I would think this is normal. If it's very strong then get it checked

Had oil and filter replaced today, mech checked it over and couldn't find any faults and assured me it's normal so guess I was being a bit anal

Since I've had oil changed gonna get the plugs done at the same time, is there any new revisions with the VW plugs or can I just quote my REG num and take what they have in stock..
