How similar is a Mk1 Leon Cupra R and Golf Gti/ED30 etc
« on: December 20, 2011, 03:56:53 pm »
As above really guys, the Golf is going soon :popcornsoda: and I am replacing it with a Mk1 Leon Cupra R and I am trying to work out how similar they are to the above really. Now I am aware the engines is a 1.8t like the old GTI but what about underpinnings? Like suspension components etc?

Mods yes but way too many to stick in this little box

They share the same platform as the Mk4 Golf, Mk1 Audi TT etc. Which is widely regarded as a piss poor chassis. The Mk1 Leon Cupra R is meant to be the best handling car out of the bunch though.

If your a racing driver you will notice the chassis is not as good, whenever I drive an mk5 it feels just like my old Cupra r, but dare I say it the lcr looks better. I loved mine and would have another.

Chassis is nothing like a Mk5 though. You dont get independent rear suspension on the Mk1 LCR.

Never said it was, all I said was both cars feel very similar, I'm Sure you could tell if you were to track them both and drive hard but 99 percent of the time you wouldn't notice.

Thanks for the reply guys. It is a 2004 225 model I have put a deposit on, std car, not sure where to focus mods. I'm guessing handling because the power is enough for now. I'm open to suggestions because I guessed a few of you guys would have owned one.

There is no nav and I believe it to be std interior etc

They handle ok, once you've made a few choice mods - they just suffer from sloppy bush design, poor geometry and the H&S brigade building in understeer.

Look up DEFCON wishbone inserts, poly the other end too. Rear ARB and have the geo set up properly.

Sideways yo!

Couple of questions for anyone that might know, I have a forge 007p fitted but its very quiet on dump. I believe its a recirc rather than atmosphere but would like an option to get a bit of noise.

Any ideas?

stick with the re-circ on the 1.8T - its how its meant to be.

Get a filter and exhaust.

Out the box the LCR was a great car, much better than the alternative Mk4 GTI at the time.
