Fitting a RCD510 to 05 plate GTI.
« on: December 18, 2011, 12:41:06 pm »
Morning all.

First off, i am new here, so hello everyone. I have  just picked up 05 plate GTI, after selling my 99 MKIV GTI, and would like to upgrade to a RCD510.  As the title suggest i would like to remove the kenwood touch screen sat nav i have fitted and go back to the RCD510. I would like to know what excatly i would need to fit a RCD510, without MFSW or DAB...... I understand there are a number of posts already but easier for me to understand when answers all in one thread. Also is there anyone near Coningsby/Boston/Lincoln, who would be able to help me fit it and any Vagcom that may need doing....Mechanics im good at electrics, might as well be speaking dutch!!! So....

1, Do all RCD510 come with DAB as standard?
2, My aerial is in the back windscreen, so where sould the DAB aerial go if required?
3, I havent got a MFSW.
4, Im guessing with the battery drain issue i would have to upgrade the can bus? or can they be reprogrammed?
5, Is there anyone around my area who can help........plenty of beer tokens or reddies available :)

Many thanks for you help and understanding.

In an 05 plate GTI you will definitely be exposed to the battery drain issue unless you upgrade the CANBUS gateway.  If you need to purchase one then I have one for sale here:  http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,39394.0.html

You will also need Aerial adapters - I have a set of those which I can throw in for an additional £15.

It will only have DAB if you have the button instead of the TIM button (top right). I'm sure some one will come along to help about where to fit the DAB aerial, I know people have tried under the headlining. (my RCD510 has DAB but haven't bothered to organise a DAB aerial as yet, main radio works just fine IMO)

As for drain issue I have a 55 plate and left it for 2.5 without a problem and without changing the canbus, adopting the 'wait and see if it drains first' method before spending more money out  :xmassmiley:

Dead easy to fit though, just plug in
VCDS cable HEX-USB+CAN. New but can do the basics including coding

Guys many thanks for your quick replies.

I think i will go for a plug and play non-dab one, fit it and then keep on eye on battery drain. :)

Battery drain also depends of the firmware version.

If you use Josi's 2720 or 2760 I think it will be fine

RCD's aren't the same, you can't change the firmware like you can with the RNS's.
