Wiring after market Head unit help
« on: December 21, 2011, 02:40:05 pm »

Had my Sony single din unit in for ages now and is perfect for my needs.

My problem is it's wired permanently and I have to remember to switch off or pop face off when leaving the car.

The unit will only get power when wired this way

Note the red wire from the cars harness isn't connected, it looks likent is in the pic

I tried red - red yellow - yellow

And various other combinations but can only get it to power up with red and yellow from the stereo conected to the double yellow plug on the cars loom. This makes it permanently live.

Help!

Thanks in advance

This will be no help to you at all I am afraid but I had the exact same problem when fitting my Alpine head unit yesterday!!

I had Halfords supply and fit it (the £25 charge seemed quite reasonable for installation), plus I had a 10% off voucher from HotUKDeals ;)

Like you the guy could only wire up with it on permanent live and I was fuming at the time as my head unit doesn't have a face to turn it off and was constantly displaying the clock (even when the ignition was completely off  :scared:)

After I finished with the numpty from Halfords I went to Whitton Audio Centre where a professional promptly re-wired it and got it to work so that it is only on when the ignition is on  :happy2:

I don't know exactly what he did but on the invoice it says "Radio Ignition Feed Plus Re-install" if that helps.

An ICE expert will be along shortly so I wouldn't worry  :happy2:

If I have to put a wire from switched live slot in fuse box that makes sense but was hoping it might be less effort than that :(

Thanks for the reply  :happy2:

^^^^^ that. Im assuming you have got a multimeter? Have you checked the ISO connector in the loom to identify a switched live? As you mentioned above it 'should' be switched on the yellow, but you never know......

No switched live - you need a can bus adapter to get this out the radio loom.

VCDS Scanning/Coding, RNS and MDI retrofits, and specialist mechanics services with VAGtek available - Just PM me for details.

Hmm that doesn't sound like it makes me go any faster. I guess I'll have to remember to pop the fascia off for a while longer lol.

Plenty of sources for a switched live in the car so no need to but a can bus adapter  :happy2:

Fuse box, back of the climate panel or cig lighter are all within easy reach.

I've run two switched lives already (hard wire sat nav & power for red LEDs in rear view mirror)
Just wondered if the existing harness / adapter allowed a switched live.

Think I will most likely use another switched live from the fuse box, cheers Steve   :happy2:
