Oil filler doesn't line up on engine cover exactly ?
« on: December 30, 2011, 01:36:31 pm »
My oil filler cap isn't in the middle of the engine cover. It's not a problem but normally german engineering is very exact. Is this normal ? Just got my car and under closer inspection it's been bounced off a few things it in it's time and whoever serviced it last didn't manage to even put the air filter cover on properly so now I'm paranoid and checking everything.

Do you mean height wise? If so, no. Mine sits slightly higher or lower (can't remember which).

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

it's off center so the oil filter isn't in the middle of the oil filter hole and it catches slightly on the cover as you pull it out.

Something weird is bugging me with my oil cap as well, when it screws down it screws on so its sitting vertically instead of across the engine, a minor thing I know but I see it every time I open the bonnet and I'm very anal about such things!

Dont worry. The engine cover sits on rubber bungs! So a few MM either way wont matter!

Yes I had the cover off (Do the late models only clip at the front ? The rear metal cover mounts are smooth on mine and that confused me when trying to clip 4 back on) I can't see how it would get to be a few mm out though.  I'll check for adjustment on the front mount positions.

mine does this, and then the other day the top bit came off in my hand

the bit with the "grip" on it that you turn separates from the bit that actually locks into the filler neck. you can take it off and realign it. i did this the other day. it just clips back on
