Mk6 door alignment
« on: December 28, 2011, 01:16:18 pm »
Had not used the car for 7 weeks as I was recovering from an operation.

Anyway, after the first day of use, I found both the front doors (it's a five door) were sticking out 2 mm along the trailing edge. It looked as if the doors had not been shut properly. They were also letting the rain in.

This was on Christmas Eve. Called VW Assist and the very nice man arrived in 45 mins and re-aligned the doors in the pouring rain. The latches had not been tightened properly for the front doors by the VW approved bodyshop. This was because I had to have all 4 doors + bonnet re-aligned when I first got the car in March 2010.

What surprises me is that I have yet to see a Mk6 Golf with perfectly aligned doors. There are 7 on my street and every one has bonnet and door alignment issues. Not very cofidence inspiring.

Have Mk5 owners had similar issues? From the number of Mk5s I have examined, the doors seem to hang much, much better. I have been informed that VW have changed the door design paramaters for the Mk6 as the Mk5 doors were too expensive to produce.

I took my car this morning to an Independent Garage (friends of mine) who re-checked and re-aligned the doors perfectly in their workshop FOC, as VW were too busy for the next few weeks to attend to this. They also did a much better job than the VW Bodyshop.

Anyway, all's well that ends well.

It's certainly not unknown for Mk5s to show this. More so in the 3 door model, as the longer doors mean the hinges take more strain.

Mk5 suffered badly when new. I answered lots of quesions about door alignment from 2005-2008.
The way the outer skin is bolten on the mk5 made them worse to fit during production.
I was only discussing panel fit and finish with a 2011 mk6 GTI owner the other day when he came over.
(He brought the fit of his bonnet, bumper and a few other things up, it was up not me who mensioned it   )
Ex mk5 GTI owner, moved to a mk6 in 2010.

My nephew's 5 door Mk6 had perfectly aligned doors 8 months ago when new. When I saw it 2 days ago, the front doors were all over the place. Back doors were fine. Could this mean there is a bit of body/hinge flexing?

my doors (5door mk6) are spot on but the bonnet was a poor fit so i sorted it myself and the bumpers don't fit perfect but no way I'm i letting the main dealer loose on my car again so its going to have to stay that way till the spring and i will re align the bumpers. bearing in mind this is a brand new car the quality doesn't seem to be what i expected for a new VW

I understand. Everytime they touch one thing, they damage something else. The worst culprits are the bodyshops. Sprayers and fitters are hopeless.
At least my bumpers were/are nicely aligned. Small mercies.
VW QC can be a bit iffy on the Golf. However, the latest Passats seem to  have tiny panel gaps and excellent fit and finish.
